New Year’s Eve is right around the corner on Sunday, December 31st. If you’re making your holiday plans, you may be wondering, what’s open/closed on New Year’s Eve 2023? Luckily plenty of restaurants and stores will be open on New Year’s Eve to help you ring in 2024, but hours may vary due to the holiday. Here’s everything you need to know about New Year’s Eve store hours so you can plan the perfect night!

What’s Open/Closed on New Year’s Eve 2023?

Supermarkets and Retail Stores

If you want to ring in the new year with some retail therapy, luckily most supermarkets and retail stores will be open on New Year’s Eve, including but not limited to:

  • Barnes & Noble – expected to be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Best Buy – most stores open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Home Depot – closes early at 6 p.m.
  • Kohl’s – most locations will be open until 7 p.m.
  • Target – expected to be open until 9 p.m.
  • Kroger – should be open during regular hours
  • Whole Foods – hours may be limited
  • H-E-B – expected to be open during regular hours
  • Food Lion – should be open during regular hours
  • Walmart – regular business hours

Keep in mind that stores may have limited hours or close early due to the holiday. So it’s a good idea to call the retailers you’re planning to visit before your shopping trip to confirm their hours.

Many stores will also be open on January 1st, allowing you to take advantage of New Year’s sales. However, keep in mind that hours may be affected by the holiday, and some stores might be closed. Here’s a list of retailers that are choosing to shut their doors on New Year’s Day:

  • Aldi
  • Trader Joe’s
  • Costco
  • Sam’s Club

Restaurants

If you’re tired of cooking after Christmas dinner, usually lots of restaurants are open on New Year’s Eve, such as:

  • IHOP
  • Denny’s
  • Dunkin’
  • Cracker Barrel
  • Cheesecake Factory
  • Chili’s
  • Olive Garden
  • Applebee’s
  • Chipotle
  • Burger King
  • Pizza Hut

Keep in mind that hours may vary by location, especially during the holidays. So it’s always a good idea to call ahead to confirm that the restaurant is open. New Year’s Eve is a popular day to dine out, so it’s also smart to make a reservation if the restaurant allows it.

Although most chain restaurants are open, local places are a toss-up. Some may choose to close early or shut their doors entirely to give their employees a break. Others may extend their hours so diners can stay and watch the ball drop.

Make sure to call or check the restaurant’s website ahead of time to confirm their holiday hours. You may need to make a reservation if there’s a special prix fixe menu or New Year’s Eve event, so don’t assume you can walk in and get a table.

Banks and Credit Unions

Since New Year’s Eve isn’t a federal holiday, you’d expect banks to be open. But unfortunately, financial institutions will be closed December 31st because it falls on a Sunday. Most banks are only open during regular business hours Monday through Friday and have limited hours on Saturday.

Some banks like TD Bank and Bank of America may open select locations on Sunday for a few hours. Branches inside supermarkets are also more likely to be open on Sundays.

But for the most part, you can expect banks and credit unions to be closed on New Year’s Eve. So you’ll have to plan ahead and finish your in-person banking tasks on Saturday, December 30th or wait until after the holiday. Banks will also be closed on New Year’s Day since it’s a federal holiday and won’t reopen until Tuesday, January 2nd.

Luckily you can still access online banking while your local branch is closed. Keep in mind that transactions may not process until your bank reopens. Most drive-thru ATMs are also in service 24/7, so you’ll be able to withdraw cash over the holiday break if needed.

Post Office, Stock Market, and Government Offices

The post office, stock and bond markets, and government offices usually follow a similar holiday schedule. They all close in observance of New Year’s Day and will also be closed on New Year’s Eve this year since it falls on a Sunday.
