Federal Holidays (Updated for 2024)

December 7, 2023 by Tamila McDonald

Federal Holidays 2024

Every year, the federal government formally recognizes specific holidays. After the addition of Juneteenth in 2021, the total number of holidays the federal government acknowledges is 11. In most cases, government offices close on these holidays to give employees a day off. While it’s not required by law, many other companies choose to do the same. As a result, by knowing when the federal holidays are occurring in 2024, it’s possible to plan for potential closures. Here’s what you need to know about the federal holidays for 2024.

Federal Holidays 2024

Over the course of a year, the federal government recognizes 11 federal holidays. On federal holidays, most government organizations – aside from those associated with public safety and national security – close for the day. Businesses may also close on all, some, or none of the federal holidays, as there’s no legal mandate requiring them to shut down.

Understanding when federal holidays occur is beneficial. It can help people anticipate the closure of federal offices or various businesses, as well as adapt to government services that aren’t available on those days.

Here is a list of federal holidays in 2024:

New Year’s Day – Monday, Jan. 1

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – Monday, Jan. 15

Washington’s Birthday (Presidents Day) – Monday, Feb. 19

Memorial Day – Monday, May 27

Juneteenth – Wednesday, June 19

Independence Day – Thursday, July 4

Labor Day – Monday, Sept. 2

Columbus Day – Monday, Oct. 14

Veterans Day – Monday, Nov. 11

Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, Nov. 28

Christmas Day – Wednesday, Dec. 25

What’s Typically Closed on a Federal Holiday?

In most cases, the expected closures on federal holidays relate to various government agencies, organizations, and services. However, some other businesses also broadly close on federal holidays.

Here is a list of organizations that aren’t typically open on federal holidays:

Mail and delivery services (USPS, UPS, FedEx, etc)

K-12 schools

Higher Education Schools (universities, colleges, trade schools, etc.)

Child care services

Banks and credit unions

Stock markets and bond markets

Professional services offices (accountants, lawyers, etc.)

Medical and dental clinics (not including emergency rooms)

Here are some organizations that may close for some – but typically not all – federal holidays:

Retail stores

Grocery stores

Drug stores

Restaurants

Non-Federal Holiday Schedule 2024

It’s very common for people to celebrate holidays that aren’t on the federal holiday schedule. Usually, these don’t result in business closures, though there can be exceptions, particularly for Easter.

Here is a list of the most widely recognized non-federal holidays in 2024:

Ground Hog Day – Friday, Feb. 2

Valentine’s Day – Wednesday, Feb. 14

Patrick’s Day – Sunday, March 17

Good Friday – Friday, March 29

Easter – Sunday, March 31

April Fool’s Day – Monday, April 1

Cinco de Mayo – Sunday, May 5

Mother’s Day – Sunday, May 12

Father’s Day – Sunday, June 16

Halloween – Thursday, Oct. 31

New Year’s Eve – Tuesday, Dec. 31

None of the holidays above are official federal holidays. However, since many federal employees don’t work on Sundays, a large number will incidentally have the day off for Easter, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day in 2024.

Do you have plans for any of the upcoming federal holidays? Do you celebrate any non-federal holidays that you wish would become federal holidays? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
