Black Friday is an excellent day to go shopping, snag some affordable holiday gifts and replace some items around your home at rock-bottom prices. However, if you’re not into spending money but would rather invest your money, you may wonder if the stock market is open on Black Friday. The good news is that it is, though it is not open regular hours.
For What Holidays Is the Stock Market Closed?
The stock market is closed for ten holidays in 2023, including Thanksgiving. The holidays and the corresponding days the stock market is closed are as follows:
New Year’s Day – Monday, January 2nd
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – Monday, January 16th
Washington’s Birthday – Monday, February 20th
Good Friday – Friday, April 7th
Memorial Day – Monday, May 29th
Juneteenth National Independence Day – Monday, June 19th
Independence Day – Tuesday, July 4th
Labor Day – Monday, September 4th
Thanksgiving – Thursday, November 23rd
Christmas Day – Monday, December 25th
The NYSE will close for these same holidays in 2024 and 2025, though the actual days will vary depending on when each holiday is observed.
What Are Normal Stock Market Hours?
On regular days, the New York Stock Exchange is open from 9:30 to 4 p.m. Eastern Time. The stock market does not close for lunch, so every ordinary day, it is open for six and a half hours.
What Are the Stock Market Black Friday Hours?
In addition to the ten holidays when the stock market is closed, there are several days when the stock market has shortened hours, including Black Friday. Typically, the stock market has shortened hours on July 3rd, Black Friday, and Christmas Eve. However, in 2023, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day fall on the weekend, so there are only two days when the stock market has shorter hours.
On Black Friday, as is typical with other shortened days, the stock market is only open from 9:30 to 1 p.m. Eastern Time, meaning only three and a half hours are available to trade.
Even though the United States stock market has shortened hours on Black Friday, remember that on Thursday and Friday, you may be able to make international trades because other countries do not celebrate Thanksgiving as we do, so they are not closed.
Final Thoughts
If you’d like to make a trade on Black Friday before or after shopping, or if you’d rather watch your money (hopefully) grow in the stock market rather than spend it shopping, remember that you only have a few hours—from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern Time to make your transaction. If you’d like to make any transactions the week of Thanksgiving, you’ll have to do so Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or half the day on Friday.
