Penny-Pinching In The Big Apple: A Guide To Conquering New York On A Budget

September 18, 2023 by Susan Paige

Are you planning a trip to New York and want to avoid breaking the bank? Well, isn’t that the dream? Many of us imagine New York trips to be synonymous with big bills and massive credit card swipes. But it’s totally doable to enjoy a great time without spending a fortune in NYC. So, for the fellow traveller who fancies a bit of Yankee indulgence without the extravagant prices, here’s a guide made especially for you.

1. Flights And Travel: Timing Is Everything

When looking to cross the pond, try your best to avoid the summer months and Christmas time. The city gets chaotic (and expensive) during these times. Spring and autumn are beautiful in New York, with fewer tourists and lower airfare prices. Use flight comparison sites and consider flying mid-week for the best deals.

2. Stay Local But Not Too Central

Manhattan might be where all the action is, but remember, there are other areas that aren’t as expensive. Not only do they have their own unique charms, but accommodation here can be cheaper. The subway system is efficient, so getting to Manhattan is a breeze. Just remember to have your wits about you on the subway, NYC is full of weird and wonderful creatures.

3. Speaking Of The Subway…

Get a MetroCard! Those yellow taxis are iconic, but the subway is a fraction of the price. Plus, it’s how the locals travel. Embrace it. And if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, NYC’s public bikes are a great way to see the city and get some exercise.

4. Eat Like A Local

New York is teeming with delis and diners where you can enjoy delicious meals without the fancy restaurant tag. For the tea lovers missing a good ol’ British brew, skip the coffee shops and find a local café. They’re everywhere. Also, don’t forget food markets like Smorgasburg in Brooklyn. Quality food, tantalising flavours, and easy on the pocket.

5. Free Attractions? Yes, Please.

Central Park, the High Line, Brooklyn Bridge… these are all iconic spots that cost zilch. Wander around, have a picnic, and take in the views. Plus, certain museums offer ‘pay what you wish’ days or have suggested donations.

6. Avoid The Souvenir Traps

Those I❤NY t-shirts? They’re everywhere and vary in price. Head away from the main tourist spots for the best deals. Or better yet, consider alternative souvenirs like local art or unique finds from NYC’s myriad thrift stores.

7. Broadway On A Budget

Dying to see a show but flinching at the prices? Check out the TKTS booth in Times Square, which offers discounted tickets for same-day performances. For the patient souls, the lottery system or rush tickets are a godsend. Sometimes, waiting till the last minute really does pay off!

8. Get App-y.

There are countless apps designed for NYC travellers, many of which focus on deals and discounts. ‘NYC Go’ is a lifesaver, offering tips on free events, special offers, and more.

While NYC might have the glitter and glamour that comes with a hefty price tag, a savvy Brit traveller can absolutely have a memorable experience without feeling the pinch. So, grab that Union Jack backpack and jet off to the Big Apple. An affordable and memorable adventure awaits!
