The Best Dollar Store Finds

June 5, 2023 by Jennifer Clark

the best dollar store finds
The best dollar store finds are out there. You just have to know what makes a great deal.

I might be more surprised that I don’t shop at dollar stores more if I knew they had more items I needed on a regular basis. Prices as low as theirs usually means lower quality, but sometimes, quality is of little concern in certain circumstances. There are instances where taking the extra trip to the discount chains would save me money, particularly on items I may plan on only using once. I did some research, and you might find the following list useful if you are looking for some of the best dollar store finds.

Gift bags and cards

It’s amazing how much gift wrapping can cost. Holiday and gift shopping expenses already add up quickly, not including the wrapping paper. Dollar store has comparable gift bags and cards that are cheaper than other retailers. I was buying birthday gifts for my cousins’ two children, and the total cost of the small gift bags with cards came to about $20. At dollar stores, you’ll be able to find these for less. A larger gift bag would cost about the price of the small gift bag I purchased from the other store. It just seems silly to spend an excessive amount on these items when the wrapping will be long forgotten once the gift is opened.

Seasonal/Holiday items

Speaking of holiday shopping, there can be some nice finds for holiday decorating. Whether it is a barbecue, Halloween or Christmas, dollar stores tend to keep their locations on point with the holidays.

Home decor

If you hit the right store, you’ll find some great home decor at a lower cost. Vases, fake flowers, vase filler stones, and even mirrors are all examples of the decor you may expect to find. There is no need to pay more for a basic glass vase that looks identical to one that is a fraction of the price.

Picture frames

In addition to home decor, dollar stores often carry picture frames as well. I’ve noticed a basic black frame can cost more than I am willing to spend at craft stores. Not to mention, I was not impressed with the quality. While you do sometimes have to be careful with the durability of frames from a dollar store, they can still last you quite some time and are a great option if you are on a strict budget.

Office items

Office supplies can add up, and even if you do not have a home office, dollar stores may be worth checking for cheaper items. Paper, notebooks and folders may certainly be less expensive when buying in bulk, but desk organizers, pens and the like can often be found at a dollar shop. This is also a viable option for coloring items for children. They work through crayons and markers fairly quickly, so this is an item you’ll want to buy cheaper.

Plastic dishes and containers

If you’re planning a party, you’ll most likely want paper plates to preserve your good kitchenware. And, if you haven’t noticed, tupperware tends to go missing or lose bits and pieces, which means regular replacing. You won’t have to worry about finding these items for less at dollar stores.

Kitchen and cleaning supplies

Don’t spend more than you need to on cleaning and kitchen gear. Cleaning products like glass and car cleaner are regularly available at a low cost as well as scrub brushes, sponges and dish rags. Other merchandise includes but is not limited to: can openers, towels, potato peelers and other small kitchen tools.

Pet toys

As a dog owner, I am a sucker for buying special gifts for my dog when I see them while out and about. But, they can be ridiculously priced sometimes, especially for something my pooch is going to tear apart in a couple short months. If I need something fun yet disposable that I know she will enjoy just as much, it’s nice to know dollar stores carry them.

Just because you can buy items at a discounted rate does not mean they are all good deals. Part of strengthening your finances is making wise shopping decisions. However, the above list are common items you can buy for less and save money. We hope it helps you in future shopping and following your budget.

What would you say are some of the best dollar store finds? Do you regularly shop at dollar stores?
