Monday, May 29, 2023, is Memorial Day. Many workers have the day off to celebrate, giving them a chance to head out with friends and family or simply spend some quiet time at home. Since Memorial Day is a federal holiday, retailers may decide to close their doors for the day. If you were hoping to get some shopping done – and possibly take advantage of Memorial Day sales – knowing which retail stores are open is important. Here’s a look at which stores are open on Memorial Day.

Costco is closed on Memorial Day. It is one of the few retailers that decide against taking advantage of one of the year’s biggest shopping days. Instead, all of its employees have the day off, opting to keep their doors closed instead.

Some State-Run Liquor Stores

If you live in a state that has state-run liquor stores, you might not be able to shop there on Memorial Day. Some states will close the state-run liquor stores on some or all federal holidays, as state and local government offices typically don’t open on those holidays.

Before you head to a state-run liquor store, you might want to contact the location and confirm they will be open. Otherwise, you may be limited to what is available at grocery stores – typically beer and wine. Alternatively, you can always make sure to stock up before the holiday weekend, ensuring you have what you need.
