Save Money With These Outdoor Activities For Kids

May 4, 2023 by Tamila McDonald

outdoor activities for kids

With the weather getting warmer, it’s the perfect time to spend time outdoors, particularly if you have children. Being outside is associated with a variety of mental health benefits. Plus, it can give kids opportunities to be active, allowing them to burn off excess energy and remain physically fit. Fortunately, there is a wide array of outdoor activities for kids that don’t cost a bundle. Here’s a look at how you can save money with these outdoor activities for kids.

Go for a Hike

Hiking is a great way to get your kids outdoors and spend time exploring nature. Most hiking trails are free to use, and for those with entry fees, the cost is typically quite minimal.

Additionally, hiking is a low-cost activity. Usually, you only need the proper clothing and footwear, along with some snacks and water to keep energy levels high and to stay hydrated.

Plus, you can turn hiking into an educational experience. It’s an excellent opportunity to teach kids about the different plants and animals they may encounter along the way or to discuss other aspects of the ecosystem. However, you can also use it as a time to bond as a family.

Bike Riding

Bike riding is another relatively low-cost activity that works well for kids and adults alike. Aside from an initial investment in a bicycle, the rest of the experience is either inexpensive or free. Usually, you’ll only encounter additional expenses if you head to a park with an entry fee, so you can also keep it cheap by choosing spots that are open to the public.

If you don’t own bikes, you can potentially find used ones for far cheaper than new ones. Check thrift stores, second-hand sports stores, or similar places to see if you can find a deal.

Go to the Beach

If you live near the beach, heading there can be a perfect outdoor activity for kids. Children can swim, build sandcastles, collect shells, and explore tide pools. Additionally, a day at the beach provides ample opportunities for family bonding and can be an excellent way to destress.

Many beaches don’t have entry fees, which means you’ll only need to spend money on fuel to get there and any items you may need for some fun in the sun. Beach toys are typically low-cost, and products like sunscreen usually aren’t particularly expensive. Just make sure to bring plenty of water and to have options for shade.

Gardening

Gardening is a fun and educational activity that can help your kids connect with nature. Plus, a home garden can provide a source of fresh fruits and vegetables, which can help you save money on groceries.

If you have a backyard, you can set up beds to hold a variety of vegetables and fruits. Just make sure you choose ones that work well in your climate, and do a little research to make sure you can meet their needs.

If you don’t have a backyard, consider container gardening. Many fruits and vegetables can do very well when potted. Plus, it can eliminate any climate concerns, as you can control the conditions if you bring them inside.

Have a Picnic

Heading out for a picnic can work as a low-cost outdoor activity. Plus, dining outside can be a lot of fun for kids. Pack up some sandwiches, sides, and drinks, and then take a trip to a local park or nature reserve. You could also use your backyard if you’d rather stay close to home.

Picnics provide a great opportunity for families to bond and spend time together while enjoying the beauty of nature. Consider bringing along some simple outdoor games for extra entertainment. Cornhole is an excellent option, as it’s typically portable. However, there are other options available, too.

Head to a City Pool

Usually, a trip to a city pool doesn’t cost a bundle. Plus, swimming is an excellent form of exercise, allowing everyone to get in a workout while enjoying a warm summer day.

In many cases, you’ll want to head to the pool near opening time, particularly if the location is popular. Pools have limits on the number of guests they’ll support. Usually, that’s due to safety. As a result, heading there early makes it more likely that you’ll be able to get in for a swim.

Do you know of any other outdoor activities for kids that can help parents save money? Have you tried any of the options above and want to tell others about your experience with the activity? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
