How to Become a Professional Gambler: A Career Guide

January 23, 2023 by Susan Paige

Do you love gambling and like the idea of turning it into a career?

Just a few years ago, it would have been very difficult to do this. Gambling and, more specifically, online gambling was almost universally illegal throughout the U.S. back then.

But in more recent years, a lot of the states throughout the country have started to legalize online gambling, including sports gambling. It has made figuring out how to become a professional gambler more of a possibility for many people.

Do you want to enter the fray and find ways to gamble in order to make a living? There are some steps you’ll need to take to transform gambling for entertainment into gambling as a career.

Here are a handful of gambling tips that can help turn you into a professional gambler in no time.

Make Sure You’re Cut Out to Be a Professional Gambler

Before you start trying to learn how to become a professional gambler, you should give some thought to whether or not you’re cut out for this job. Not everyone who enjoys gambling is going to be a great pro gambler.

As a professional gambler, you’re going to experience the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. You’re going to need to stay even-keeled at all times and avoid getting too high or too low at any point.

If you’re not able to do this, you might not make it as a pro gambler for too long. So you should spend a considerable amount of time thinking about this aspect of things.

Put Together a Gambling Bankroll

You don’t necessarily need to put together a $1 million bankroll to become a professional gambler. But you are going to need to have a bankroll to start off with.

This bankroll should not consist of your entire life savings. If you use your life savings and lose, it could put you into a very tricky spot. Your gambling career will be over, and your financial future will be compromised as well.

You can kick things off with a gambling bankroll of as little as just $1,000. It’ll help you get involved with professional gambling without putting too much of your money at risk.

Decide on the Best Ways to Gamble

What are some of the best ways to gamble in your opinion? Do you like to play casino games that offer great odds, or are you more of a sports bettor?

Either way, you don’t want to spread yourself too thin by trying to gamble on everything at once. Instead, you want to hone in on the types of gambling that you’re good at to give yourself a better chance to win money.

You’re going to get a much better outcome if you decide that you’re going to spend the bulk of your time doing, say, sports gambling. You might even want to take it a step further than that and decide which specific sports you think you’ll enjoy the most success with while gambling on them.

Look for the Right Place to Gamble Online

As we alluded to earlier, online gambling was pretty much illegal in most pockets of the country several years ago. It made it difficult for someone who wanted to become a professional gambler to do it.

But these days, the internet has been flooded with so many online sportsbooks and online casinos. It’ll give you the opportunity to consider many different options before landing on the one you like best.

BMR, or Bookmakers Review, is an excellent place to get odds for sports betting and to compare online sportsbooks. It’ll be a great resource for those who want to figure out how to become a professional gambler while betting on sports.

Understand How to Gamble

Regardless of which form of gambling you decide to do as a professional gambler, you’re going to need to know the ins and outs of it.

If you settle on sports gambling, you’ll need to know about all the different types of bets you can place. It’ll be important for you to know the differences between moneyline bets, point spread bets, parlay bets, and more.

If you want to become a professional gambler and set your sights on playing blackjack all the time, you’ll need to know basic blackjack strategies as well as how to play different blackjack variants. The more you know about your preferred form of gambling, the better off you should be when it comes to winning money.

Place Appropriately Sized Bets While Gambling

Bankroll management is something that’s going to be of the utmost importance to professional gamblers. If you’re betting too much of your bankroll at once, it’s not going to be long before you go broke.

If you start with $1,000 as we talked about earlier, you aren’t going to want to throw down $100 bets anytime soon. That’ll be a good way to blow through all your money within just a few hours, if not sooner.

Instead, you might want to begin with $10 or $20 bets at most. It’ll make your money last longer while still putting you in a position to pad your bankroll.

If you’re disciplined enough to build your bankroll up slowly over time, you will be able to put yourself in a position to bet more money. But until then, you’re going to need to limit your bets so that you can limit your losses if you ever hit a cold streak.

Avoid Chasing Losses When You Gamble

Speaking of cold streaks, you’re going to go on them from time to time when you’re a professional gambler. When you gamble as much as you do, cold streaks will come with the territory.

During cold streaks, there will be times when you’ll be tempted to try to “chase your losses” by throwing down larger bets than you usually do. You’ll do this because it’ll feel like you’re “due” to get a win.

This almost never works out for gamblers, though, and it’s definitely not something you should get into the habit of doing if you want to make it as a professional gambler. On the days and nights when you hit cold streaks, you’ll be better off walking away from gambling for a little while so that you can recalibrate.

There are some people who simply can’t walk away when they’re down money. They’ll feel like they have to keep betting to recoup their losses. But you aren’t going to be able to assume this mindset if you’re going to cut it as a pro gambler.

Keep Tabs on Your Gambling Wins and Losses

As a professional gambler, you’re going to be responsible for paying any taxes associated with the wins you rack up over the course of a year. For this reason, you’re going to need to keep accurate records related to both your wins and losses.

Unfortunately, most online casinos and sportsbooks are only good when it comes to keeping up with your wins. They’ll send you documentation at the end of each year noting how much money you won from them.

It’ll be up to you to factor your losses into the equation. It’ll also be your job to keep track of any expenses that you rack up each year related to gambling. These expenses might serve as tax write-offs and cut down on your income tax responsibilities.

Whatever you do, don’t just assume that someone else is going to keep tabs on the money you’re winning and losing while gambling. If you do this, you might be in for quite the surprise when tax time comes around.

Seeing your wins and losses on paper might also be an effective way to decide which types of gambling you should focus on. If you find that you’re always winning money while playing a particular game, that might be a game you’ll want to spend more time playing.

Knowing How to Become a Professional Gambler Is Important

If you love online gambling and have always thought that you might want to be a professional gambler, now is a great time to try it. It’s never been easier to place bets online.

Just be sure that you understand how to become a professional gambler. Otherwise, you might not last as a pro gambler for very long. Utilize the gambling tips found here to launch your new career.
