Is Costco Closed on New Year’s Day 2023?

December 30, 2022 by Tamila McDonald

Is Costco Closed on New Year's Day

Sunday, January 1, 2023, is New Year’s Day, a federal holiday that celebrates the start of the new year. Since the holiday falls on a Sunday and many people get the day off, some consider it an excellent time to shop. However, since it is a holiday, not all retailers are open. If you were thinking about heading to Costco, you might be asking yourself, “Is Costco closed on New Year’s Day 2023?” If you are wondering whether Costco is open, here’s what you need to know.

Is Costco Closed on New Year’s Day 2023?

Yes, Costco is closed on New Year’s Day 2023. The retailer traditionally closes in recognition of the holiday, giving its employees more time to celebrate with their families and friends.

The New Year’s Day closure applies to both the Costco warehouse stores and the Costco business centers, so you can’t head into either of them during the holiday. Plus, since Costco business centers are usually closed on Sundays, those locations might not open on Monday, January 2, 2023, either. Still, it’s best to check with your nearest Costco business center to confirm that’s the case for that location.

You can still shop online at Costco.com. Just be aware that any orders won’t start preparing for shipment until the following business day, which is Monday, January 2, 2023, for the retailer.

Does Costco Have a New Year’s Day Sale?

Costco doesn’t specifically have a New Year’s Day sale. However, there are always discounts available at the warehouse stores and online. You can review the monthly sales flyer for more information about the available deals or peruse the website to see what discounts are available.

Costco Holiday Schedule 2023

While nearly every retailer closes on at least a couple of holidays each year, Costco is closed for holidays far more often than others. One reason is that Costco is incredibly employee-centric. As a result, the retailer chooses to close for holidays to give its workforce more time to celebrate with friends and family members.

Here is a list of the Costco 2023 holiday closures:

  • New Year’s Day – Sunday, January 1, 2023
  • Easter – Sunday, April 19, 2023
  • Memorial Day – Monday, May 29, 2023
  • Independence Day – Tuesday, July 4, 2023
  • Labor Day – Monday, September 4, 2023
  • Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, November 23, 2023
  • Christmas Day – Monday, December 25, 2023

Additionally, Costco warehouse locations typically close early on a few days each year. Usually, that happens on the day before Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve. As a result, if you want to shop on any of those days, you need to head to the store early enough to ensure you’re finished before the store intends to close.

Costco Standard Operating Hours

Most Costco warehouse stores have similar operating hours, making it easier for shoppers to know when they can head to the store. For the majority of locations, the schedule is close to the following:

  • Monday through Friday – 10:00 am to 8:30 pm
  • Saturday – 9:30 am to 6:00 pm
  • Sunday – 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

Costco Business Centers primarily have the same operating hours, too. In most cases, their schedules align with the following:

  • Monday through Friday – 7:00 am to 6:00 pm
  • Saturday – 7:00 am to 4:00 pm
  • Sunday – Closed

However, the schedules above represent typical operating hours for Costco locations. There are some warehouses and business centers that may deviate from those schedules. As a result, anyone who prefers to handle errands early or late in the day should check with their preferred location in advance. That way, you can confirm when they’re open and adjust your plans accordingly.

Where You Can Shop on New Year’s Day

While Costco stores are closed on New Year’s Day 2023, many others are open. Both Target and Walmart welcome customers during the holiday, as well as drug stores like CVS, Walgreens, and Right Aid. Many grocery stores – including Safeway, Publix, and Kroger – are open. Additionally, BJ’s Wholesale Club doesn’t close on New Year’s Day.

There are many other retailers that choose to open their doors during the holiday, too. If you have a preferred alternative to Costco, check with the store to see if it’s open.

Were you hoping to head to Costco on New Year’s Day, and are you disappointed that the stores aren’t open? Do you think it’s smart for Costco to give the employees the day off instead of opening? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
