5 Easy Ways to Save Money on Basics

December 19, 2022 by Sam Hayes

It can be difficult to afford even the basics that your family needs every day. If you’re tight on money, there are ways to make this process easier. While it will take some effort, it’s worth the savings. Here are some key ways you can go about saving money on basics at home.

1. Sign Up for Savings at Stores You Visit Often

Do you go to the same stores regularly? Sign up for any rewards programs they offer. These programs are usually free and can help you save a lot of money. Since the store wants you to shop there, they’ll use their membership program to incentivize you to do so. This generally means getting exclusive coupons, rewards for shopping, and other savings opportunities. Since the more you shop, the more savings you’ll get with these programs, it’s worth signing up for the stores you use regularly.

2. Learn How to Make Your Own Cleaning Supplies

Cleaning supplies can cost a lot of money, but you need to keep your home clean. If you’re tight on cash, you can make your own cleaning supplies. Using ingredients like lemons, vinegar, and others that have been used in cleaning for centuries, you can make effective cleaners that are much cheaper than what you’ll get at the store. Look for recipes from reliable sources. You can make your own all-purpose cleaner, laundry soap, and more. While it will take time to make them, doing this will save you a lot of money over the years.

3. Buy Bulk Toothbrushes or Electric Toothbrush Heads

You shouldn’t try to save money by skipping dental hygiene. The American Dental Association says to brush twice a day in order to stay healthy. However, one in four adults doesn’t follow this advice, including a third of men. If your reasoning for not brushing your teeth is that toothbrushes and electric toothbrush heads are too expensive, you can save money by buying them in bulk. It will be more expensive upfront, but ultimately save you a lot of money.

You shouldn’t be afraid to use an electric toothbrush if you’re on a budget. While it’s more expensive than a manual toothbrush, it’s also statistically more effective at removing plaque and preventing gum disease. By buying the toothbrush heads in bulk, you’ll make them an affordable option for you and your family.

4. Compare Prices

Sometimes, two different stores will have the same product for significantly different prices. If you always go to the same store, you might be missing out on a deal somewhere else. Take some time to compare prices. This goes for both your regular shopping and for products you rarely buy. If you take this step each time you shop, you’re likely to save a lot of money over time.

5. Buy the Store Brand

Many stores have their own brands for grocery staples. These options are generally cheaper than the name brands you might be more familiar with. If you haven’t been buying the store brand, you should consider doing so. Many times, they are just as good as the more expensive options, sometimes even made in the same factories. Next time you grocery shop, try substituting store brands for a few of your usual options. If you like them just as much, you can save a lot of money this way.

When you’re shopping for basics for your home and family, there are ways to save money. When your budget is tight, it’s worth taking the extra steps to find ways to cut costs. By applying these tips to your shopping routine, you can easily do the shopping for basics much more manageable.
