Great Ways Couples Can Save Money Together

September 29, 2022 by Susan Paige

Being in a long-term relationship with someone else can give you lots of advantages. Whether you get married or not, you get to enjoy the company of someone you love and who is there for you. Another advantage of life as a couple is that it can benefit you financially. Sharing your costs between two people, with two incomes, can make it a lot easier to save money. It’s even better if you’re able to work together to create and work toward mutual savings goals. Couples can do a number of excellent things to save money together, many of which are pretty low-effort.

If you and your partner or spouse want to save more money, you can take steps both individually and together to meet your goals.

Discuss How to Handle Your Finances

The most important thing that any couple needs to remember is that discussing finances regularly is essential. Even if one of you is better with money than the other, you should still both be aware of the state of your finances. This is particularly true if you live together or have combined your finances in any way, such as having a joint bank account or owning property together. You should discuss how you want to handle your money, how you want to share expenses, and what goals you want to work toward together.

Plan Your Meals Together

Having a partner can make it easier to save money on food. You can split the cost of groceries between you, and it’s also easier to buy things in bulk when there are two of you. So make sure you’re working together to stick to a food budget, rather than just doing your own thing. If you plan your meals together, you can ensure you both get meals that you like and that you’re aware of how much you spend on food. It’s also a good way to evenly share the workload of planning and preparing meals, so it isn’t left to one of you alone.

Buy Multi Deals

Combining your buying power is often a good way to save money on a couple. It can give you access to deals you might not be able to get as a single person. Next time you’re looking for car insurance, you might want to see if you can put both of your cars on one policy. This is often a cheaper option and can save both of you a lot of money. Or if you’re thinking about a gym membership, you might be able to get a better deal in some places if you sign up as a couple.

Challenge Each Other to Save

A little friendly competition can encourage both of you to save more, especially if you have set a savings goal that you want to meet. You could see which of you can save more money each month, and the winner gets a treat (paid for by the other person). If you have an income disparity, work out how much you’ve saved based on a percentage of your income. This makes the competition fairer, as the person with the lower income would have a harder time saving as much as the person with the higher income.

Assess Your Medical Insurance

Do your employers provide medical insurance or other perks? Before taking individual plans, it’s a good idea to check whether one option could be better. If your medical insurance covers your spouse and could give you a more cost-effective deal than what’s on offer from their employer, one plan could be a more sensible choice than two. Instead of making two payments every month for two different plans, you could consolidate your medical coverage into a single plan that works for both of you.

Get Tax Breaks

If you’re married, you might be eligible for certain tax breaks, which can help you to save money. Married couples are often better off when filing their taxes, so make sure you look into the tax breaks you can get. If you’re not sure whether to file together or individually, speak to an accountant to get advice about what you should be doing. You could increase your take-home pay by making adjustments to your deductions and declaring your marriage on your tax forms, so don’t neglect the possibility that you have some significant savings coming your way.

Saving as a couple can help you to reach your goals and plan your future together. Living as a couple can give you more ways to save compared to being single too.
