Have you ever wondered how much money the participating nations of a World Cup receive? This year’s World Cup in Qatar has a reported prize pool worth up to $700 million. That’s the combined amount of cash shared out amongst all 32 competing nations. All the way from those who get knocked out in the group stages, to the winning nation.
A lot of supporters think that the nations taking part are just playing for prestige and glory. They don’t realize that there’s a lot of money at stake for winning the biggest prize in international football.

The Winners of Qatar 2022 are set to receive $42 million
It has been reported that the winning nation in Qatar in 2022 will receive a whopping $42 million. At the moment, the betting favorites to win the World Cup are Brazil at +600, followed by France at +650, with England and Argentina next, both at +750. The best online gambling Canada and USA sites also believe that Spain (+850), Germany (+1000), Belgium (+1200), and Portugal (+1200) have outside chances of winning and claiming the $42 million prize! And any nation with a chance of winning the World Cup will have a bonus negotiated with their respective Football Associations before the competition starts, too.
As well as bonuses to cash in, all the commercial deals and endorsements that will become available to a player who can call himself a World Cup winner will outweigh the bonuses that the players will get from their own nation’s governing body. Ultimately the $42 million may seem like loose change to them.
The Rest of the Breakdown
All nations are reported to receive $1.5 million just for turning up. This money is intended for use on preparation: hotels, flights, security, etc. The 16 sides that get knocked out in the group stage will then receive a further $9 million.

From then on the 2022 Qatar World Cup is a knockout competition. Those who lose in the Round of 16 leave with a further $13 million, with the four teams who leave after the quarter-finals receiving $17 million. Onto the final four, and the team who loses the fourth-placed play-off gets $25 million, with the winners of the match no one wants to play, receiving $27 million.
This leaves just two more nations. The beaten world cup finalists will pick up $30 million, with the winners of the 2022 Qatar World Cup picking up an extraordinary $42 million.
If you think that’s a lot of money to shell out for FIFA, then consider that they also pay out over $200 million to the clubs for the use of their players, and a reported figure upwards of $130 in insurance premiums.
Don’t feel too sorry for FIFA having to pay out all this money though. They have their own ways of making cash, and by their own projections, they expect the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to generate over $5 billion!
