5 Things You Can Get Secondhand for Your Baby and Some Things You Should Get New

May 13, 2022 by Justin Weinger

One of the best ways to save money is to buy the things you need second hand whenever possible. The problem is that many new parents want everything brand new and while new is good, it’s not necessary for everything and can end up costing you a lot of money in the long run. Baby items are no different. You can often get things in great condition because they were used for such a short amount of time. Buying them secondhand not only gives them a new life, but in some instances can save you a significant amount of money and helps you stay on budget.

Pack and Play

A newer Pack and Play is a great option to get pre-owned. They are an easy way to contain your baby when you need to keep them safe for running to the bathroom or taking a quick shower. And when they get bigger, you can make a nice little play spot to keep your pets away from them as well. Some parents even use a playpen to keep the baby close to them in the bedroom. Just be sure to check if there have been any recalls on the brand you’re planning to buy and if it has all the proper pieces for it to function.

Baby Crib and Mattress

As long as it’s a newer crib, without a drop side, and it doesn’t have any recalls, a used crib and crib mattress are great to get for your baby. They’ll only sleep in it for around a year anyway, so they don’t always get a lot of use. Plus, most crib mattresses have a plastic covering that makes them easy to clean.

Baby Bottles

It sounds weird, but baby bottles nowadays can cost a small fortune. Try getting a brand like Tommy Tippee brand new and see what you think about the cost. Bottles are easy to sterilize, and you can always get new nipples if you are uncomfortable getting those used. You can get a treasure trove of good brand-name bottles to try out if you’re willing to get them used. Some babies only like certain bottles and specific bottle nipple flows, so try out what works best for your baby.

Baby Wraps

There are plenty of different kinds of wraps to hold your baby and be hands-free. You could get a used ring sling, something like a K’Tan that holds your baby close to you, or a more structured baby carrier. Moms and dads love the closeness and bonds they can form with their baby being so close, but the freedom to give their arms a rest from holding them all the time.

Get New Baby Clothes

Your little ones skin is very delicate. Ensure that the baby clothes they wear are made from GOTS certified organic cotton. Base the amount of clothes you buy off of how often you’re planning on doing laundry. If you’re washing often, then you won’t need to buy as many outfits. Plus, if you buy mix and match patterns, dressing your little one will be a breeze.

Get a New Breast Pump

Breast pumps can harbor bacteria if they are not cleaned properly. It’s best to get these brand new unless it’s a closed system pump (like the ones you find in a hospital). In that case, all you would need to get are the hoses and flanges. Fortunately, most insurance companies will cover the cost of a new one so you don’t have to pay as much for this.

Get a New Car Seat

Unless you really know a person well enough to trust them that their car seat has never been in an accident, car seats are something you definitely want to invest in brand new. Seats that have been damaged, that are past their expiration date, or that have been in a crash can all be hazardous to your baby. Buying a new car seat will ensure your baby’s safety when you are on the road. Get help installing it correctly from your local fire department if you need it.
