Is Costco Open on Christmas Day 2021?

December 17, 2021 by Tamila McDonald
Is Costco Open on Christmas Day
MONTREAL, CANADA – OCTOBER 5, 2018: A hand holding a receipt with the brand name and logo in Costco warehouse. Costco is an American corporation which operates a chain of membership only warehouses.

Christmas Day is a time where most people get the day off of work, allowing them to spend the holiday with family and friends. While shopping isn’t on the agenda for most, there are occasions where needing to run an errand or to grab a last-minute item could arise. As a result, many people do wonder, “Is Costco open on Christmas Day 2021?” If you are curious about whether you can head to one of the retail giant’s warehouse stores on the holiday, here’s what you need to know.

Is Costco Open on Christmas Day 2021?

No, Costco isn’t open on Christmas Day 2021. Like most other major retailers, Costco shuts its doors on this particular holiday, ensuring all of its employees get a day off.

Additionally, Costco warehouse stores will close early on Christmas Eve. Most locations will shut down at 5:00 pm instead of the typical closing town. However, some stores may deviate from that schedule. As a result, if you need to shop later on Christmas Eve, check with your closest Costco to confirm whether it will be open.

Does Costco Have a Christmas Sale?

Technically, Costco doesn’t have a sale running on Christmas Day. Mainly, this is because the current warehouse deals expire on December 24, and a new sale flyer won’t be active until after Christmas.

However, many of the deals in the current savings flyer could help you have a merrier Christmas. There are discounts on popular gifts and some household staples. As a result, you may be able to take advantage of the savings to avoid busting your holiday budget.

Costco Holiday Schedule 2022

When it comes to holiday closures, Costco has far more than most retailers. Here is an overview of the Costco holiday schedule for 2022:

  • New Year’s Day – Friday, December 31, 2021 (Observed)
  • Easter – Sunday, April 17, 2021
  • Memorial Day – Monday, May 30, 2022
  • Independence Day – Monday, July 4, 2022
  • Labor Day – Monday, September 5, 2022
  • Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, November 24, 2022
  • Christmas Day – Monday, December 26, 2022 (Observed)

There are usually a few early closure days thrown in the mix, too. For example, along with Christmas Eve, there may be a reduced schedule on the day before Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, as well.

Costco Operating Hours

The majority of Costco warehouse stores follow a similar operating schedule. In most cases, it’s something along the lines of the following:

  • Monday through Friday – 10:00 am to 8:30 pm
  • Saturday – 9:30 am to 6:00 pm
  • Sunday – 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

As for the Costco Business Centers, they use a different schedule. However, like the warehouses, most Business Centers operate during similar hours, typically something like:

  • Monday through Friday – 7:00 am to 6:00 pm
  • Saturday – 7:00 am to 4:00 pm
  • Sunday – Closed

It is critical to note that the operating hours above are just typical schedules. Some locations may deviate from those norms, either slightly or significantly. As a result, if you like to shop early in the morning or later in the day, then it’s best to check with your preferred Costco warehouse or business center specifically. That way, you can confirm the operating hours in advance to see if they align with your favored times.

Additionally, it’s vital to understand that unexpected schedule changes can occur. While COVID-related operating restrictions are likely no longer a concern, inclement weather or utility issues could also lead to changes without much notice. Similarly, some technical issues may prevent a store from running correctly, leading the location to close.

Where You Can Shop on Christmas Day

If you’re in need of a last-minute item, you do have some options on Christmas Day. Chain drug stores like CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens may be your best bet, as many locations will at least have limited hours on the holiday.

Some grocery stores also operate on a holiday schedule on Christmas Day. In a pinch, you may find a convenience store that’s welcoming customers, too, though that isn’t guaranteed.

Has there ever been a time where you wished Costco was open on Christmas Day or has the need to shop on the holiday never arisen? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
