Planning To Sell Car Parts? 4 Things To Know

November 24, 2021 by Susan Paige

All vehicles have a lifespan that depends on how they’re used on the road. However, people don’t know when their ride will eventually stop giving them a ride to work or any other place. If you have a car that’s no longer in good shape, you might have thought of selling it for parts. It can be an excellent way of disposing of your vehicle while earning some money on the side. However, selling car parts can be a bit tricky if you have no idea what to do in the first place.

If you’re planning to sell car parts, here four things you need to know from the get-go:

  • You Need To Tear Down Your Car First

If you haven’t had your vehicle taken apart yet, then now is the time to get started. Before selling process, you have to tear down your vehicle to salvage the parts you can dispose of for value. However, it can take a few weeks or even months before your car can be fully disassembled.

That being said, it can be a good idea to hire professional car wreckers to handle the job for you. Although you might have the tools and equipment to take your vehicle apart, the disassembly process requires extensive knowledge to successfully remove certain parts, including the engine, professionally and safely. Hence, it’s best to entrust the job to professionals who specialize in tearing down automobiles. They also know how to test the parts to see if they still work and if those parts still have a good enough value to be worth selling.

  • Title Is Essential When Putting Car Parts For Sale

Generally, the title plays a crucial role in selling auto parts. It serves as proof that you own the vehicle and have the authority to dispose of the components for a reasonable price. In short, you need to be the legal owner before you can tear a vehicle down and sell its parts for money.

Moreover, the type of title you have might also impact your ability to sell vehicle parts for a reasonable price. For example, if your automobile comes with a clean title, you can sell its parts for a higher price than a salvaged car. That’s because it has never been involved in an accident; hence you can make more money when selling it for parts.

On the other hand, you can sell the parts of a salvaged title car for a lower price than the one with a clean title. That’s because the vehicle underwent many repairs but was wrecked, totaled, and salvaged later on.

So, if you’re planning to sell your car for its parts, make sure to determine the type of title you have. That way, you can make the most out of the price you charge for your auto parts.

  • Not All Parts Are Easy To Sell

Another thing you should know is that not all car parts are easy to sell. Depending on the type and model of the vehicle and the presence of new feature or automotive standards, certain parts are more likely to sell within a couple of months. These can include airbags, engines, transmission, and seats. Even if there’s no specific sale time, you can dispose of these parts quickly when you start selling auto parts.

However, the car parts other than the ones mentioned above might be difficult to sell in the market. These can include electrical wirings, suspension parts, vehicle chassis, and many more. Since they’re considered less important, it might take a long time before selling them in a limited market.

Because of this, it’s best to identify and segregate every single part after tearing your vehicle down. That way, selling the core parts will be much easier and faster.

  • There Are Different Ways To Sell Car Parts

Nowadays, there are many ways to sell car parts for a fair price. If you want to make the most money possible, you have to do some research to determine the perfect method of putting your auto parts for sale.

The following are some ways of selling your vehicle for its parts:

  • Online Marketplace: Several digital platforms allow you to sell car parts to potential private buyers. They provide you easy access to a massive market of people willing to buy auto parts as a replacement for their car or rebuilding projects, like flipping. Hence, if you want to make the selling process much faster and more convenient, the online marketplace might be an excellent way to go.
  • Local Salvage Yards: Since they specialize in selling torn-down vehicles, selling your auto parts to salvage yards will never be difficult. They offer the best value for any used car part sold in their yards, allowing you to make the most money off your old vehicle.

Takeaway

Putting your car parts for sale can be complicated if you’re not prepared to do so. Therefore, keep the things mentioned above in mind so you’ll know what steps to take to avoid any problem in the selling process. Remember, the more you’re familiar with that to do, the better your chances of getting your auto parts sold in the fastest time possible.
