How to Save Cash Using Solar Lights (+ DIY Ideas)?

November 17, 2021 by Susan Paige

Want to know how to save cash using solar light?

If you’re planning to adopt a more sustainable, eco-focused lifestyle, solar light investments are the way to go. Not only are they easy to incorporate, but they’re light on your pocket too.

Plus, there are tons of terrific functional and aesthetically pleasing DIY ideas for solar lights that can help you save more.

Read our comprehensive guide on using solar lights to save cash (and the planet) with this cost-effective investment.

Let’s begin.

The Basics: How Do Solar Lights Work?

Most solar lights come with a unique cell that harnesses the power of the sun to generate and store energy during the day. It converts this energy into electric currents and uses it to charge a battery connected to the LED bulbs (or lights).

As a result, the lights automatically switch on at night without any power source or electrical configuration. In some cases, these lights will be attached to solar panels that control usage.

In most cases, your solar lights will produce enough energy to ensure that interior and outdoor spaces stay lit all night long. Not only are these lights energy efficient, but they are pretty to look at too. The LED bulbs and fixtures offer a more bright, natural light than regular bulbs.

However, do note that the efficiency and performance of solar lights can vary. It’s determined by the size, shape, and scale of each fixture.

The Money-Saving Benefits of Solar Lights

The cost-reduction capabilities of solar lighting are one of the most attractive aspects of this environmentally-friendly solution.  Yet, homeowners should know that these fixtures can often cost a hefty price when looking at upfront payment. There might even be some other financial strings attached to the setup if you’re planning a solar-based project on a large scale.

Nevertheless, solar lights, solar panels, and associated resources cover up the cost with time.

That’s because:

  •       Solar light installations are inexpensive. You can save up to 40% on setup costs and get done faster than non-solar light installations.
  •       Maintenance costs are low. Solar lights are more durable and long-lasting than their energy-draining counterparts. Due to this, you will hardly ever pay for costly repairs and replacements ( as long as their warranty lasts).
  •       No more energy bills. The greatest advantage of installing solar lights is the significant reduction in energy bills. It provides you with the return-of-investment you need to cover up the cost of the setup.

Besides this, you need to learn how to save cash using solar lights by selecting budget-friendly bulbs and setting up lights strategically. Compare market prices and look for products that meet your individual needs.  Additionally, you can even get crafty and use DIY ideas for solar lights to save some cash by utilising simple, inexpensive solar supplies.

Easy DIY Ideas for Solar Lights to Save More Money

Here are our favourite DIY projects involving solar lights and everyday household items:

The Magic of Mason Jars

Repurpose old mason jars to create cute centrepieces for your dining area or patio.  You can place your solar lights inside coloured mason jars for a cool, vibrant look.

Suppose you’re looking for more drama, stick hot glue glass pieces or gems to the jar. The light will reflect and emit multiple beams to create a cool effect. It’s an ideal way to brighten up your dinner party and backyard celebrations.

Miniature Lighthouses for a Nautical Effect

If you live by the sea or have a little pond in your yard, you can create small lighthouses as stands for your solar lights.  You need to collect a couple of different sized clay plant pots, paint, and adhesive tape for this project.

Here’s what to do next:

  1.   Paint 3-4 clay pots in a variation of white and red paint.
  2.   Use black paint to illustrate some windows and doors of your lighthouse.
  3.   Set painted pots aside to let them dry. (Approx. 24 hours)
  4.   Stack your painted pots from big to small to create the lighthouse structure. Use adhesive tape or glue to ensure that they stick together.
  5.   Place your solar light on top of this miniature lighthouse.

That’s it. Once you’re done, choose a good place to keep your lighthouse. You can create more than one lighthouse to illuminate a specific space in your garden.

Lanterns for a Vintage Vibe

If you’re interested in a more quintessential look, DIY ideas for solar lights use lanterns as light holders. There are various ways to utilise this rendition around the yard.

Like:

  •     Hanging a lantern at each end of your patio/deck.
  •     Placing lanterns at the side of the driveway to light up that path
  •     Tying lanterns to different tree branches as shimmering party decor

It’s a Wrap!

In the end, knowing how to save cash using solar lights requires market research and a dash of creativity. Use our DIY ideas to get your eco-friendly venture started. You can add new bulbs or decorative solar light pieces to expand on this cost-saving investment. The possibilities for using solar lights are endless. Each brings a unique effect to your outdoor (and indoor) lighting setup.

Hopefully, our little ideas will spark your imagination.
