Is the Stock Market Open on Thanksgiving 2021?

November 15, 2021 by Melissa Batai

Is the Stock Market Open on Thanksgiving?

Before the pandemic, you may have noticed the trend that more and more businesses were remaining open on Thanksgiving. However, starting in 2020, that trend began to reverse itself. In appreciation for their employees’ hard work during the pandemic, many businesses once again closed on Thanksgiving. Those businesses are continuing with that trend in 2021. Will this continue even after the pandemic is over? Time will tell.

Many businesses, however, have always remained closed on certain holidays. These businesses include banks, government offices, and the stock market. If you want to get in some trading during your Thanksgiving holiday, you may wonder, is the stock market open on Thanksgiving?

Is the Stock Market Open on Thanksgiving?

The quick answer is no, the stock market is not open on Thanksgiving. The stock market closes for nine holidays per year:

  • New Year’s Day,
  • Martin Luther King Day,
  • Washington’s Birthday/President’s Day,
  • Good Friday,
  • Memorial Day,
  • Independence Day,
  • Labor Day,
  • Thanksgiving, and
  • Christmas

Irregularities in the Stock Market’s Hours

The stock market is open from 9:30 to 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time every day of the week except the nine holidays mentioned above and three days when the stock market closes early, at 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

The stock market has three half days:

  •  on the day after Thanksgiving, which is November 26th this year,
  • July 3rd, and
  • December 24th

What Businesses Are Open on Thanksgiving Day?

Is the Stock Market Open on Thanksgiving?

The stock market may be closed on Thanksgiving Day as well as stores that used to be open such as Target and Walmart. However, if you’re having a low-key Thanksgiving and want to get some shopping in or if you forget some ingredients you need for Thanksgiving Day, there are still many stores that will be open on the holiday:

  • ACME,
  • Bass Pro Shops,
  • Big Lots,
  • Cabela’s,
  • CVS,
  • Dollar General,
  • Family Dollar,
  • Five Below,
  • Gordman’s,
  • Kroger,
  • Lilly Pulitzer,
  • Michaels,
  • Old Navy,
  • Ralph’s,
  • Rite Aid,
  • Stop & Shop,
  • Vons,
  • Walgreen’s, and
  • Whole Foods Market

While these stores will be open, many of them will be open for reduced hours. Before you visit any of these stores, you should call them first. Some stores will be closing early while others will be closed most of Thanksgiving Day and then open in the evening.

Final Thoughts

If you’re wondering, is the stock market open on Thanksgiving, the answer is no. If you want to make a trade, you’ll have to do it early on the morning of Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving because the stock market closes early on the day after Thanksgiving.

However, while you’re waiting to conduct your stock market transaction, several stores will be open on Thanksgiving whether you’re looking for a grocery store or a department store. Remember to call before you go because most stores likely won’t be open regular hours on the Thanksgiving holiday.
