How to Clean Your Hardwood Floor

October 13, 2021 by Susan Paige

Moved into a new property with a hardwood floor? Or just had one fitted? While hardwood floors are luxurious and durable, they require regular cleaning and maintenance. Learn how to clean your hardwood floor the right way with this useful guide for general maintenance and cleaning tips.

Quick tips you’ll need:

Floors encounter dirt, spills, scratches, daily traffic and accidental damage. The easiest way to clean something up is soapy water and a damp mop. If the ordinary cleaning method isn’t cutting it, you might need to refresh your floor with specialist floor cleaners.

Sweep away any bits of gravel that may have come in from outside. A doormat is the best method for keeping harsh nasties coming in.

For the best results, we recommend using a mop with a flat head that will minimize the chances of scratching your floor.

Use protected pads on the bottom of your furniture. These could be seats, tables and sofas. It will prevent them from scuffing your hardwood floor.

Cleaning

We all have a cleaning routine we use to maintain our hardwood floors. If you don’t, let’s take a look at the essential items you will need:

  • Maintenance guide from your floor supplier
  • Cleansing brush
  • Finisher – If you prefer an invisible oil or lacquered, it’s important to give your floor a coating to give it another layer of protection against scratches and stains.
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Mop
  • Specialist floor cleaner (optional)
  • Soapy water

Extra Facts

Your floor supplier will recommend floor cleaners for solid wood and engineered oak floors. But for a quick clean, simply fill a bucket of water with soapy water and cleaner for the best results.

You can refinish and sand your wooden floors as much as you prefer, although they won’t need doing for the first 10-15 years as they are super durable! Finish with a coating you desire to maintain its natural, gorgeous look.
