Did you know that Sunday delivery was once a standard operating practice of the United States Post Office? From 1885 to 1997, the USPS delivered special delivery mail and packages on Sundays in select cities and post office locations. Additionally, the USPS only delivered mail on Sundays in exceptional circumstances for some religion-based communities. For example, the city of Loma Linda, California, a city about 105 miles north of San Diego, is comprised of a large Seventh-Day Adventist population. Since Saturday is their Sabbath, the local USPS in the area, comprised of 15 USPS employees serving 8,000 people, would deliver mail in Loma Linda on Sundays. But even Sunday deliveries in Loma Linda ended by 2011. Besides such exceptions, the USPS traditionally operates from Monday to Saturday to save money, trim operating costs, and manage its budget. So, is the post office open on Easter?
No. No, it isn’t.
Is the Post Office Open on Easter This Year?
If you are wondering, “is the post office open on Easter?” the answer is no. Easter Sunday falls on April 4, 2021, this year and the post office will be closed.
Here is a post office location finder that you can use to find a post office near you. Just input your zip code, city, or state of residence into the location finder. Then, you will be presented with a list of post office locations, and their operating hours, near you.
Keep in mind that when it comes to post offices, there is no general rule about operating hours. There are over 34,400 individual post offices in all 50 states and their operating hours vary.
Most post offices operate from Monday to Saturday or even just on weekdays. And the post offices that do operate on Saturdays usually operate on for limited hours.
For example, your local post office may be open from 8 AM to 6 PM or from 9 AM to 5 PM. And then on Saturdays, it may be open from 8 AM or 9 AM to Noon or 3 PM.
So, you don’t have to wonder, “is the post office open on Easter?” since Easter traditionally falls on the first Sunday in April. And the post office is usually closed on Sunday.
Can You Get a Delivery on Easter? (Technically, No, But Also Maybe?)
If you live in a high mail traffic area, you may have a remote chance of receiving a special package on Easter. However, you would have to live in a population-dense area for this to occur, and even then, don’t count on it.
It would have to be a special package delivered under special circumstances for that to occur. And since such an event would have to occur on a Sunday, that reduces the feasibility of the premise even more.
The post office delivers Priority Mail Express and Amazon packages on Sunday – and that is more likely to occur on an Easter if you live in high mail traffic areas.
Is The Post Office Open on Good Friday or the day Before and After Easter?
Your local post office should be open relative to the operating hours of those post offices in your area. So, yes, the post office is open on Friday before Easter, Good Friday, the Saturday before Easter, and then on Easter Monday.
Make sure to refer to your USPS location finder and check local operating hours before going out.
And here is a list of all the federal holidays when the USPS is closed.
Easter is not a federal holiday. And because it always falls on the first Sunday in April, and the post office is traditionally closed on Sunday, chances are better than good that your local post office will be closed.
Or is it?
Limited Access Post Office Service on Sundays
The post office in your local area is traditionally closed on Sunday – that is a basic given.
However, that does not mean that you can’t go to the post office on a Sunday.
Many post offices will have an unlocked area of the office for public self-service transactions. So, you may be able to go to your local post office on Sunday, even on Easter, but there will be no staff to assist you.
You may be able to buy stamps, check a post office box, or even place mail or packages in a dropbox. And even then, packages you place in a dropbox won’t be mailed until the next day.
Is the post office open on Easter? The answer is no. However, the answer might be “yes” under some circumstances.
Holiday Service on Sunday
The USPS is open on Sunday during national high-volume holiday seasons, like the Christmas holidays. However, operating hours vary from city to city.
Large Post Offices, Malls, and Shopping Centers
If you live in a large, metropolitan city with a dense population, there may be a few post office locations that are open on Sunday, even on Easter.
For example, the James A. Farley post office, located near Madison Square Garden in New York City, is open seven days a week due to high transaction volume.
Large malls and shopping centers in city centers may also have small post offices located in them that are open every Sunday too.
However, there is a drawback to this convenience. The few post offices that might be open Sunday, even on Easter Sunday, will probably be located nowhere near you. So, if you live in the outer boroughs of New York City, the Farley post office may be open, but it would be quite a trek to get there.
You will probably have to travel to a city center or traverse a labyrinthine shopping center to find it. Also, any post office open in a shopping center or mall on a Sunday will be a small office with limited staff members.
And there won’t be many open, so you won’t have many options.
So, check the USPS location finder, or check the website of your local shopping center, to know for sure.
