Bubble Envelopes 101: Why and How You Should Use Them

January 4, 2021 by Susan Paige

If you have your own business and need to ship out small items to customers, shipping issues quickly become part and parcel of your operations. Transit damage is one of the most common reasons why customers ask for refunds or replacements, and it can quickly add to your bottom line if you don’t control it. While changing shipping companies is always an option, this does not always solve the problem.

Small packages are dropped as many as 27 times during standard shipping, from an average height of 5 meters. This can spell disaster for delicate products, which break easily. This is why the right kind of protective packaging is as important as how you ship your products. Bubble envelopes offer comprehensive protection for your products, take up less space, and get transported a lot safer than boxes.

What Are Bubble Envelopes?

Bubble envelopes or bubble mailers are durable manilla envelopes that are lined with bubble wrap. The advantage of bubble mailers is that they are small, which means that you will keep shipping costs to a minimum, and they come inbuilt with everything you need. They are self-sealing, meaning you don’t have to spend money or resources to stock adhesive separately.

The bubble wrap inside makes sure your products are kept safe from accidental drops. Finally, envelopes are likely to be shipped with other envelopes. This reduces the chances of your package being shipped with heavier, bulkier parcels, decreasing the chances of damage as well.

Do They Come in Different Sizes?

Yes, bubble envelopes come in different sizes for different sizes of packages. Different sized envelopes are suitable for use to ship different categories of products. You can, of course, use a standard envelope size for all your products, but you might be ending up wasting money in the long term.

Different sized envelopes are used for packages because of several issues. One of the most important reasons is protection. Large items squeezed into smaller envelopes gives the customer a bad impression, but it strains the envelope itself and makes it more likely to split. Secondly, the envelope can’t do its job properly as the items are pressed against the protective covering, exposing them to being damaged.

What Size of Bubble Mailers Should I Use?

4×8 Inch

This is one of the smallest bubble mailers you can get on the market. This is perfect for shipping samples of your products to customers without spending a bomb on the packaging. If you sell jewelry, pins, customized USB drives, and small pieces of art, this is an excellent size for you. These are also relatively inexpensive, starting at just $14 for a hundred pieces.

6×10 Inch

This is a very versatile size of bubble mailer as you can send a lot of different products in this. This packaging size is popular among sellers of boutique skincare products, the recently popular pots of handmade slime, makeup, DVDs, and more. The slightly larger size gives you a little more leeway in terms of shipping thicker products, so you can also send small notebooks and similar items as well.

8.5×12 Inch

This is one of the largest sizes of bubble envelopes you can get and can be used for a variety of products across the board. This packaging size has become quite popular among Etsy sellers who make high-value handmade items. Bubble envelopes of this size can hold clothes, full-sized stationery, games, and different kinds of food as well. If you sell products of multiple sizes but have the resources to only stock one size of envelope, this is a versatile option.

10.5×16 Inch

This is among the largest envelopes you can choose to buy. If you often ship multiple items in the same order, this is an excellent size to stock. It gives you space to store more in one package, and the envelope doesn’t feel overstuffed when you do. Overstuffing envelopes is counterproductive as it exposes you to incur damage during transit. If you are running into this overstuffing issue with the previous size, you should upgrade to this one instead.

Ultimately, it is most advantageous to keep multiple sizes of bubble mailers in stock so that you can choose which one to use depending on the orders placed with you. Choosing the right size is essential because it makes your business seem more polished and professional. Additionally, you don’t want customers fishing out for a small item in a large envelope as it negatively impacts first impressions and has an effect on customer satisfaction as well.
