Does Costco Price Match With Other Retailers?

October 15, 2020 by Trey LaRocca

Costco Price Match

Costco is known for offering great prices on many of the everyday essentials. They even offer some sweet pricing on specialty goods like electronics and jewelry. Despite their reputation of premium value, many still wonder if they are getting the best deal. The way some retailers deal with this concern is by price matching. This practice is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: The store will match the advertised price of any other retailer to ensure you get the best price. So, as the frontrunner of value shopping, does Costco price match?

The Short Answer

No, Costco does not price match other retailers. Don’t run off, though! There is more to dive into here, and it can help you make the best shopping decision possible.

The reason a retailer like Costco does not feel the need to price match is because they often offer the best prices on, well, everything. Typically, other retailers won’t even price match Costco; this is due to them being a “club store” that requires a membership to shop. They offer lower prices than pretty much every other retailer as a result, and that is why they do not need to price match. On average, they offer some of the best deals on what they sell. By diminishing profit on the merchandise for which they don’t offer the best prices, they jeopardize their ability to keep such great deals on the other items.

Costco’s Price Adjustment Policy

A unique way Costco ensures value for their customers is their price adjustment policy. This basically makes sure that you never buy a product, then see the price drop right after you leave the store, leaving you feeling like you wasted some money. If you purchase a product, and the price changes within 30 days, you can request a price adjustment to the new promotional price. They will credit you for the difference, and all you have to do is request the adjustment online if you bought it at Costco.com, or at the membership counter of the store at which you made the purchase.

While this doesn’t help if another retailer posted a better price, odds are Costco already had the best price. By making sure you are getting their best price, you are very likely getting the best price overall. On average, at least, you will be saving the most money and time by making good use of your membership.

Best Practice

So, if you want the best possible deal on everything you buy, do your research beforehand. You don’t have to worry about price-matching if you go to the right store in the first place. While it is nice to go to one place for everything, there is really no way to ensure that you’ll score on every product. If one-stop shopping is your play, go to Costco. If you need the best price every single time, go to Google.
