Is Walmart Open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

January 11, 2018 by Alexa Mason

Walmart MLK Day
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the second federal holiday of the year. Banks, post offices, and stock markets will all be closed in observance of the holiday, however, the majority of retailers will not close their doors for MLK Day. Most of them only close in observance of Christmas (December 25). Is Walmart open on Martin Luther King Jr Day?

Walmart is the largest retailer in the United States, and there are a ton of people who rely on the retailer for their groceries and other household needs. Store hours during the holidays can be a bit confusing, especially when it is a federal holiday. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a day recognized by many institutions throughout the U.S., so that has left many people wondering whether stores will be open or closed.

Is Walmart Open Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

Walmart will be open on MLK Day. According to Walmart’s holiday schedule, Christmas is the only federal holiday in which Walmart closes its doors entirely. So, if you need anything from the retail giant on Monday, you will be able to get it.

Walmart Services Available on MLK Day

Most Walmart stores have a bank, hair salon, nail salon, an optician and income tax preparation service inside the store. Those service providers are independent of Walmart and do not follow the same operating hours as Walmart stores. Check with your local store to see if those service providers will be closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

What Days Does Walmart Close?

Walmart only closes on Christmas each year. On Thanksgiving, some Walmarts close their doors and reopen in the evening for early Black Friday sales. These are the only two days that Walmart has an altered schedule.

When Will Walmart Stores Open?

Since Walmart will not be closed on Monday, January 15 in observance of MLK Day, none of the days around it will be affected by the holiday either. They will be open the following hours:

Sunday, January 14,  2018: Regular hours

Monday, January 15, 2018: Regular hours

Tuesday, January 16, 2018: Regular hours

Is There a Walmart MLK Day Sale?

Walmart does have a sale on most federal holidays, but not on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Although there are no specific deals for MLK Day, there are many great deals available. Many stores will be getting rid of some of their “New Year’s” merchandise. These things include exercise equipment, dieting merchandise and Tupperware (and other organizational items). Be sure to check your weekly flyer for deals.

Will Walmart.com be Available?

Because Walmart is still open for MLK Day, Walmart.com will still be fully operational. In fact, Walmart.com is operational every day, but delivery around holidays, such as Christmas, from the website, may take a bit longer.

As the second federal holiday of the year, many people get confused about what is open and what is closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. As always, if you are wondering if a store near you is open, you can give them a call or check their hours online.
