Mixed martial arts (MMA), ultimate fighting and other types of fighting competitions have become more popular in recent years. Most bars hold fight nights when matches are on and millions of people tune in. So, how much are these boxers and MMA fighters making?

Donald Cerrone is a mixed martial arts fighter who fights in Ultimate Fight Championship (UFC) matches. Cerrone fights out of Albuquerque, New Mexico and has a pretty substantial fan base. How much has the 34-year-old fighter made though? What is Donald Cerrone’s net worth?

About Donald Cerrone

Donald Cerrone is of Italian heritage. He was born on March 29, 1983 in Columbus, Ohio but he grew up in Denver, Colorado. He was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder at a young age. Through school Cerrone always had a problem paying attention and got into fights often. During his sophomore year in high school a friend introduced him to more formal styles of fighting like kickboxing, taekwondo and later on Muay Thai.

As an amateur he went undefeated and he had 18 first-round knockout wins. Then he transitioned into mixed martial arts and began World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC). During his professional career he has had 41 matches with 32 wins (only nine losses since 2010). Eight of those 32 wins were by knockout.

After a few years WEC merged with the UFC and now Cerrone has become the fighter in the spotlight that many fans know him to be. So, how has his career impacted his finances?

Donald Cerrone’s Net Worth

Donald Cerrone's Net WorthDonald Cerrone’s net worth has risen to $5 million over the span of his career. What many people don’t realize, however, is that many UFC fighters don’t make most of their money fighting. The majority of the cash comes from advertising and winning.

In UFC you have to win to get your full paycheck. This is difficult for some fighters because fights only get scheduled every six months or so. Cerrone, for instance, fought in January and lost. His paycheck was likely much less than when he wins. His next fight isn’t until July. So, if he pulls in $100,000 for a fight it may need to last him months.

The average pay for a UFC fighter varies. If the fighter wins more they get paid more. Fighters will also earn more if they win a title or there is a special event. Most fighters aren’t earning millions per match though (maybe millions per year). The bulk of their wealth stems from advertising.

As you may have noticed, fighters like Cerrone have advertisements on the shorts they wear to fight and also star in commercials and print advertisements for various companies. Each advertiser could pay tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the fighter. One of Cerrone’s largest contributors has been Budweiser.

A fighting career won’t last forever for anyone. Eventually people get too old to continue. Cerrone isn’t anywhere near throwing in the towel though. In fact, you’ll be seeing him in the ring again in less than a month so expect to continue to see his net worth climb.
