Stores Open and Closed on Father’s Day

June 16, 2017 by James Hendrickson

stores open and closed on father's day
Father’s Day falls on the third Sunday every June. Although this holiday is consistent, which businesses remain open or closed for Dad’s day is not. Much like Mother’s Day, many of us like to take our dads out for a nice meal or perhaps may even need to pick up a last-minute gift. Even though Father’s Day is not a federal holiday, businesses may still be closed. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. The following list includes stores open and closed on Father’s Day.

Stores Open and Closed on Father’s Day

Walmart

Walmart is open on Father’s Day. You’ll not only be able to pick up any last-minute Father’s Day cards or run errands on Sunday, but you’ll also be able to stop at the Walmart pharmacy if need be.

Target

Target is open on Father’s Day. Snag any extra sales at Target Sunday, which will have regular store hours for Father’s Day. You can also buy an item online for in-store pickup. Visit their website at Target.com to start shopping.

Costco

Costco is open on Father’s Day. There are not too many days in the year that Costco closes. In fact, it actually only closes for seven different holidays, but Father’sDay is not one of them. Get anything you need from Costco Sunday.

Grocery Stores

All grocery stores are open on Father’s Day. Despite the fact that Father’s Day always falls on a Sunday, a popular day for many businesses to be closed, all major grocery stores such as Kroger, Safeway, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods will be open. Your local grocery stores will likely be open as well, as long as they typically have Sunday hours.

Drug Stores

National drug store chains are open on Father’s Day. The three major chains (CVS, Rite-Aid and Walgreens) will be open on Father’s Day. Independently-owned drug stores that are normally open on Sundays will likely be open on June 18. Conversely, if it is not normally open on Sunday, it will likely be closed on Father’s Day. If you are unsure whether or not your drug store will be open, give the store a call to confirm their hours on Sunday.

Restaurants

In most cases, yes, restaurants are open on Father’s Day. Holidays like Father’s Day bring in a lot of foot traffic to restaurants, so many will be open to take advantage of families taking Dad out for a meal. If the restaurant is open on Sundays, then it will likely be open for Father’s Day. Make sure to also ask about what specials they are having for the occasion. Restaurants like Outback Steakhouse and Benihana will give bonus cards to those who purchase a gift card for Father’s Day.

If you are unsure about a restaurant’s hours, call them and inquire about their Father’s Day hours of operation and specials. If they are open, you may want to may a reservation as, like Mother’s Day, this is a popular day to dine out.

Gas Stations

Gas stations are open on Father’s Day. Gas stations that are normally open on Sunday will be open on June 18. Sometimes local gas stations close on Sundays. If this is the case, they will likely be closed on Father’s Day. However, there should be plenty of other stations open for your fueling needs.

Banks and Credit Unions

The majority of banks and credit unions are closed on Father’s Day. Most banks and other financial institutions are closed on Sundays. Because Father’s Day lands on a Sunday every year, these places of business are closed. The only banks that will be open are banks that are normally open on Sunday (TD Bank and Citizens Bank at the Walmart locations). There also may be a few regional credit unions open on Father’s Day as well.

ATMs and online banking make it possible to do your banking even when the bank is closed. Customers will be able to do the majority of the basic financial transactions on Father’s Day through these two sources. These transactions may take until the following business day to post to your account though, so plan accordingly.

Post Offices

Post offices are closed on Father’s Day. Post offices, like banks, are always closed on Sunday, so they will also be closed on June 18. There are a few post offices that have Sunday hours; however, you will want to call and confirm whether or not they will be open on the holiday.
