James Mattis’ Net Worth

March 23, 2017 by Amanda Blankenship

James Mattis' net worth
President Donald Trump released the first draft of the federal budget last week and people are concerned about places he wants to cut the budget. However, one section of government that isn’t concerned about any budget cuts is the Department of Defense, headed by Secretary of Defense James Mattis.

Mattis, like many of the other appointed members of Trump’s Cabinet, is a wealthy man who has been involved in Washington for years. How wealthy is he though? How does James Mattis’ net worth stack up against the rest of the wealthiest Cabinet in United States history.

James Mattis’ Profile:

Net worth in 2017: $5 million
Profession: Secretary of Defense
Age: 66
Source Of Wealth: Military Salary/Pension
Residence: Pullman, Washington
Citizenship: U.S. Citizen
Marital Status: Single
Education: National War College

James Mattis’ Career

James “Mad Dog” Mattis was born on September 8, 1950 in Pullman, Washington. He grew up in Richland, Washington and graduated from Columbia High School in 1968. Mattis went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree from Central Washington University in 1971 and then his masters in international security affairs form the National War College in 1994.

Mad Dog’s career wasn’t put on hold until he graduated in 1994 though. He initially enlisted in the marine corps in 1969 and was commissioned a second lieutenant on January 1, 1972. Among his peers Attis was considered to be an intellectual and a polished young man.

As a lieutenant, he served as a rifle and weapons commander in the 3rd Marine Division. Once he was captain he was assigned to the Naval Academy Prep School as a Battalion Officer. He also commanded rifle and weapons companies in the 1st Marine regiment and, as a major, manned a recruiting station in Portland, Oregon.

He was later promoted to lieutenant colonel, colonel, major general, lieutenant major and, by 2006, Lieutenant General Mattis was chosen to take command of I Marine Expeditionary Force. Then, in late 2007, he was promoted to four-star general and took command of the U.S. Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Virginia.

In 2010 Mattis was nominated to replaced General Petraeus as the commander of U.S. Central Command. During his time as commander of Central Command Mattis oversaw the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He officially retired from the Marine Corps in 2013 and has spent three years volunteering and spending time as a board member of Spirit of America, a nonprofit organization.

After the 2016 election President Trump began naming Cabinet nominees. Among them was James Mattis who was nominated and confirmed as the 26th Secretary of Defense. So, what is the decorated veteran’s salary now and what is James Mattis’ net worth?

James Mattis’ Net Worth

James Mattis' net worthJames Mattis’ net worth sits at about $5 million and, unlike many of the other Cabinet members, he has come across that money through his work with the military. The bulk of Mattis’ $5 million fortune has come from his former military salary and pension. But how will his new position as Secretary of Defense affect his overall net worth?

As far as assets go, Mattis doesn’t live too lavishly. He is known for having a singular focus on the military and his work. Because of this, he never married or had children. He did, however, spend a fortune on books. Mattis is said to have a personal library of over 7,000 books (where a bit of his net worth lies).

Outside of his love for war and books though, Mattis lives a pretty normal life. You don’t read about the new Secretary of Defense out and about at expensive dinners or even about his large net worth (because he’s not really spending any money). And now he’s been pulled from retirement to serve as one of the most important military officials in the U.S.

James “Mad Dog” Mattis will be earning an annual salary of $203,700 while he serves as the U.S. Secretary of Defense. Of course, this will add to his overall net worth just as his military salary and pension has over the years but it won’t cause it to increase exponentially. One thing is for sure though, it’ll be interesting to see how the stone-faced military man handles the Secretary of Defense position the next few years.
