What Sargento Cheese is Being Recalled?
The product in question are any packages of Sargento Ultra Thin Sliced Longhorn Colby (6.84 oz) with a sell by date of April 12 and May 10, 2017. Sargento has also placed a recall on the Chef Blends Shredded Nacho & Taco Cheese (8 oz. package) with dates June 14 and July 12, 2017.
In addition to the cheese products mentioned above, Sargento is recalling any product packaged on the same line as the contaminated cheeses. The following have also been recalled:
- Sargento Sliced Colby-Jack Cheese, 12 oz., UPC 4610000109 with “Sell By” date of “11JUN17B”
- Sargento Sliced Pepper Jack Cheese, 12 oz., UPC 4610000108 with “Sell By” dates of “12JUN17B”, “09JUL17B” and “10JUL17B”
- Sargento Chef Blends Shredded Taco Cheese, 8 oz., UPC 4610040002 with “Sell By” dates of “H14JUN17” and “F28JUN17”
- Sargento Off The Block Shredded Fine Cut Colby-Jack Cheese, 8 oz., UPC 4610040014 with “Sell By” date of “F05JUL17”
- Sargento Off The Block Shredded Fine Cut Cheddar Jack Cheese, 8 oz., UPC 4610040076 with “Sell By” date of “F05JUL17”
The Sargento cheese products were packaged in Plymouth, Wisconsin but were distributed across the United States.
Why is Sargento Cheese Being Recalled?
Sargento Foods, Inc. as well as other companies have been performing recalls on products recently because of a potential bacterial contamination. The bacteria, listeria, can usually be found in dairy products and can cause people to become very ill.
Symptoms of listeria are fever, muscle aches and nausea. Oftentimes listeria can be mistaken for the flu. However, no cases of listeria have been reported due to the Sargento cheese contamination.
Other Recalls Tied With The Sargento Cheese Recall
After becoming aware of the Sargento cheese recall, Taylor Farms packaging facilities also issued a recall on some of its products. About 6,630 pounds of Taylor Farms chicken and pork salad products are also being recalled.
The Taylor Farms products that are being recalled were packaged in Texas and California from February 6 to February 9. The following Taylor Farms products are being recalled:
- Taylor Farms Signature Cafe Southwest Chicken Premade Salad, 10.5 oz., with “Use By” dates of “2/13/17, 2/14/17, or 2/15/17”
- Taylor Farms Signature Cafe Southwest Style Salad with Chicken, 10.5 oz., with “Use By” dates of “2/14/17, 2/15/17, or 2/16/17”
- Taylor Farms H-E-B Shake Rattle & Bowl Rowdy Ranch Hand (contains pork), with “Use By” dates of “2/17/17, 2/18/17, or 2/19/17”
Taylor Farms products that are affected by the recall have the numbers M/P-34013 or M/P-34733 within the USDA mark on the packaging.

What You Should Do With Recalled Food
If you have a product that has been recalled, don’t worry! Obviously you should not eat the food or open it. If you have eaten the potentially contaminated product keep an eye out for the symptoms mentioned above but get rid of the rest of the product. If you’ve opened the package anything that the product has touched needs to be thrown away or sanitized. Once you’ve cleaned up make sure you place the trash somewhere an animal can’t reach it.
What about if you didn’t yet open your recalled product? Can you get your money back?
Yes, you can get your money back for the recalled product. Manufacturers suggest bringing the product back to the store you purchased it from and get a full refund.
