Hunter Mahan was born in Orange, California on May 17, 1982 and was always interested in sports, especially golf. In fact, before Mahan became well known he had a great amateur career.
In 1999 he won the 5A Texas State High School Golf Championship and the U.S. Junior Amateur. Once he graduated high school Mahan moved on to the University of Southern California where he won Pacific-1o Conference Freshman of the Year.
He only stayed at the University of Southern California for one year before transferring to Oklahoma State University
. While at Oklahoma he was a two-time Big 12 Conference Player of the Year as well as a two-time first-team All American. Also, in 2002, he was the runner-up at the U.S. Amateur and in 2003 he won the Haskins Award and the co-winner of the Ben Hogan Award.
