Leslie Jones’ Career

Saturday Night Live’s Leslie Jones was born on September 7, 1967 in Memphis, Tennessee. Her father was in the United States military and she grew up moving around the country with her family. Eventually her family landed in Los Angeles, California where she attended high school. Her father began to urge her to play a sport of some sort because she was six feet tall with an athletic build. Jones chose to play basketball. After high school she attended Chapman University on a basketball scholarship and later transferred to Colorado State University when her basketball coach left to coach there.

Initially, her college career was supposed to land Jones a job as a lawyer but she changed her major multiple times. In addition to studying law, Jones also studied for a business accounting degree and a computer science degree before she settled on a communications major. During her college career Jones became a radio DJ but was still unsure of what she wanted to pursue after school.

Her first crack at standup comedy was during her college years as well. A friend of Jones’ signed her up for a “Funniest Person on Campus” contest. She won. After winning the contest Jones decided to leave school and head to Los Angeles. When she arrived in California she began performing at comedy clubs and worked at Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles and UPS. Eventually she moved to New York to work on her career a bit more, appearing on BET’s ComicView. After a while Jones felt discouraged by her career and ceased to perform any standup for a few years.

In December 2013 Jones attended a casting call for Saturday Night Live. The Saturday Night variety show was seeking to add an African-American woman to the show. Jones went to the auditions. SNL decided to cast Sassier Zapata but Jones was hired as a writer for the show. She first appeared on the show during a Weekend Update segment in May 2014. Her jokes were considered to be a bit controversial and it got her a lot of attention.

She then appeared on two episodes during the following season and began work as a featured cast member. Her first official debut on the program was on October 25, 2014. During the same year Jones appeared in Chris Rock’s “Top Five.” In 2015 she appeared in “Trainwreck” alongside Amy Schumer and Judd Apatow.

Most recently, Jones starred alongside Melissa McCarthy and Kate McKinnon in the “Ghostbusters” reboot, which premiered in 2016. With most of her success landing in more recent years, you may be wondering, what is Leslie Jones’ net worth?
