Leonardo DiCaprio’s Career

Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio was born in Hollywood, California (how fitting!) to Irmelin and George DiCaprio. His early career, like many actors, consisted of television shows and commercials. He was actually removed from the set of “Romper Room,” a popular children’s television show, for being too disruptive at the age of five. The next television deal he landed was a commercial for Matchbox cars when he was 14. He also held a few small parts in television shows like “The New Lassie” and “Roseanne.”

Between 1991 and 1995 DiCaprio began to break away from television and get into film. His debut film role was in the comedic science fiction movie “Critters 3.” In 1993, Leo played the part of an autistic boy in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.” The film was a hit and DiCaprio earned nominations for both an Academy Award and Golden Globe for his performance.

In 1996, DiCaprio began his mainstream success when he starred in “Romeo + Juliet” and in the following year starred alongside Kate Winslet in “Titanic.” His performance in “Titanic” earned him a second Golden Globe nomination. In the early 2000s he starred in multiple films such as “Catch Me If You Can,” “Gangs of New York,” “The Aviator,” “Blood Diamond” and “The Departed.” His parts in these films earned him multiple nominations for Academy Awards and he was awarded a Golden Globe for Best Actor for his performance in “The Aviator.”

DiCaprio then moved on to more psychological thriller movies such as “Shutter Island” and “Inception,” which earned $294 million and $825 million respectively. In 2012, he starred in “Django: Unchained,” which earned him his ninth Golden Globe nomination. He went on to star in films like “The Great Gatsby,” “Wolf of Wall Street” and “The Revenant,” which earned him his first Academy Award.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Wealth

A majority of Leonardo DiCaprio’s net worth comes from his acting career. The star has earned $244 million from acting since he broke into film in 1995. The actor has also earned an estimated $77 million from product endorsements and $6.5 million from producing movies during his career. It is also estimated that DiCaprio has earned approximately $96 million from investments throughout the years.

The actor’s annual salary sits above $20 million a year, a massive improvement from his earnings from first film “Critters 3” (he only earned $9,000 from this film). He has also produced three major movies, making him $1 million each, and 14 minor movies which earned him $250,000 each.

In addition to his acting and producing career, DiCaprio also earns approximately $7 million a year from endorsements. In 2011 he reportedly earned $5 million for a Japanese cell phone advertisement. He has also added to his net worth by signing endorsement deals with Tag Heuer, Jim Beam and many more.

In 2005, DiCaprio bought a 104-acre private island off the coast of Belize. The actor has announced that he plans to build an eco-friendly resort there in the future. He paid about $2 million for the island. He also owns multi-million dollar homes in the Hollywood Hills, Malibu and New York City. He owns $27 million worth of luxury homes and other properties throughout the U.S.

DiCaprio is expected to continue acting and producing for years to come. If his net worth continues to grow by $20 million annually the actor can expect to hit an overall net worth of $300 million by 2020 (just four years from now).
