How Much Does the Tooth Fairy Give and the Creative Ways She Gives Money

February 27, 2014 by Danielle Warchol

Tooth Fairy coins
February 28 is National Tooth Fairy Day, so the obvious question is, “How much money does the tooth fairy give these days?” The cost of a tooth for the tooth fairy is increasing according to the Original Tooth Fairy Poll. In 98% of the instances she appears, the tooth fairy leaves money for the lost tooth. The average price she gave in 2013 was $3.50. A first tooth was worth even more, with the average amount given being $4.51. All this despite the fact that the most common amount given was just $1 at 42% of the time.

If you have very young children, you know how excited they become when they lose a tooth. If they’ve lost more than one, however, you might be running out of ideas to spice up the tooth fairy’s visit. There are plenty of sites on the internet that provide helpful advice on ways to make giving money and gifts unique. Here are a few ways to make your tooth fairy gift giving experience a little more special and fun for your child:

Printable Tooth Fairy Certificate

Instead of just leaving them money, give them a certificate that they can hang on the wall or door as well. The one above can be printed (simply click on the image to print). This gives them something concrete to remember the event by that they’ll have long after the money they get is spent to purchase something.

Folding Money into Different Shapes

There are countless YouTube videos explaining how to fold dollar bills into different shapes. You can fold them into stars, pyramids, baskets, bows, and various other shapes. While doing this might take some time, a nice step by step video will help you form the perfect piece or origami money to delight your child when they find it. There are also a lot of experiments and tricks you can do with the dollar bill after your child receives it.

Keepsake Box

A great way to make your child more excited about receiving even the smallest bit of money is by putting that coin or dollar bill into a small keepsake box. You can make and decorate the box or tin yourself, but there are also many places online that sell different unique keepsake boxes designed specifically for the tooth fairy experience.

Keepsake Notes and Letters

Additionally, there are also websites that offer free printable tooth fairy stationary and envelopes. This is a great, inexpensive way of making the entire experience a bit more unique. This not only makes the event more exciting for the child because it’s personalized, but it’s a great way for any parent to keep track of the dates when each tooth was lost. Such keepsake notes and letters are also easy to make on your own computer as well.

Small Gifts

Changing up your gifts is always a great idea as well. While giving money can be a great gift, why not try and give a small gift every now and then? These gifts could still be money related, such as a piggy bank or coin collecting book or some other toy or gift you know that your child will enjoy. If you want to keep your child guessing about what they’ll receive next, think about swapping gifts each time your child loses a tooth, putting down money one time and a small gift the next.

“Fairy Dust”

If you really want to get into the spirit of the tooth fairy experience, you can create “fairy dust” to sprinkle around your child’s bed or room. Fairy dust doesn’t have to be anything more than some glitter you can sprinkle on their bedside table or windowsill. You can even go as far as gluing some glitter to their money or coins to make the gift seem extra special.

Golden Coins

Most children know that quarters and dimes and nickels aren’t supposed to be gold, so receiving a golden quarter may shock them silent. Golden quarters and other coins are easy to create, and it’s a rather unique way of leaving behind money for your child to discover. You can also use the gold colored $1 presidential coins, or give your child some gold or silver bullion. They may actually believe the money is even more special because the tooth fairy left them something really unusual.

Unique Money

Another creative gift is to leave unique forms of money, such as dollar coins, two dollar bills or foreign currency. Most children are too young to really use that money, so you can always hold onto it for later or, if they do want to use it, swap it out for your local currency. But leaving them money they’re not familiar with may be a great experience.

Gift Cards

If you don’t fancy the idea of leaving dollar bills or coins, you can also leave them gift cards. There are gift cards for almost anything, it seems, so they might delight in seeing a gift card to their favorite ice cream place or favorite toy store.

Treasure Hunt

If you have the time and energy to really get involved in leaving a tooth fairy gift, consider making a treasure hunt. Instead of leaving the money behind their pillow, leave a treasure map and have them hunt around your apartment or house for their final gift. This may be a great way to get your entire family involved provided your child is old enough to understand what’s going on. If they are, this could be a great, fun way for them to experience losing a tooth and receiving a gift from the tooth fairy.

Tooth Fairy Transport System

For those who really want to go all out, you can create a tooth fairy transport system. Watch the video below to get the idea.

These are just a few ideas to get your creativity juices flowing. The most important thing is to have fun so that when you child does receive the gift from the tooth fairy, he or she has just as much fun as you did putting the surprise together.
