Most people have only a grade school understanding of genetics. XX is female and XY is male. That’s where their education ended. But that’s not the whole story. Genetics is wildly more complex than that. There are many, many possible combinations including some that very much blur the traditional binary view of gender. Gender is not binary because there aren’t only two options. And yes, that includes options that result in having male or female “parts” on the outside but the opposite on the inside. And of course there are also intersex individuals who have distinct features of both males and females.
Education is a wonderful thing.
