  • OMG! We are Millionaires!

Just barely, but I just updated our portfolio spreadsheet with the year-end figures from today's market close and our portfolio balance now stands at:

    $1,001,359.64

The actual number is a little higher than that because the one thing in our portfolio that I don't update is our savings bonds. I only list the face value, not the current cash out value.

But still, that's the first time we've topped the $1 million mark. That's a nice way to end the year for sure.
    Steve

              Congrats!

I think Steve falls under StealthWealth, though being a doctor I imagine most people expect him to be wealthy

Sadly this is true. Expecting doctors to be rich is such a huge myth. Most are doing okay and getting by but have the same struggles as everyone else. I have many friends in other fields who earn a lot more than me.

Some of these MDs are really into their cars. In my parking garage, I sometime park next to a Mclaren or the new Acura NSX. I see a few 911 turbos and a few Teslas as well. There are some Aston Martins and a BMW I8.

Yeah Mercedes are for peasants, spend either 100k+ on a car or bust.

When I used to work at the hospital back around 1993-2000, when I pulled into the doctor's parking lot in my Camry, my car stood out like a sore thumb. I was surrounded by BMW, Mercedes, Acura, Lexus, Porsche, etc.

My partner of 17 years always leased a BMW. He's relatively broke but had to have that shiny new Beamer every 2 years. In the meantime, I'm the one with the $1 million portfolio and still driving a Camry.

Never assume that the driver of those luxury cars is rich. Chances are they are leased and chances are the payments are killing them.

That is one of the things that the book Millionaire Nest Door brought out. Just cause they have the 'baubles' doesn't mean they are paid for!

This is the lesson that SA taught me and has changed my life. I have lived on the make a bunch of money, spend even more side and I was miserable. I can't speak for your doctor friends that obviously consume, but I can speak from my experience. Saving is so much more fun than spending. I am no longer a slave to debt.
