  • Track Your Savings

I've been wanting since forever to find a site that would help savers track their savings. I believe the best way to save money is to be able to share with like minded individuals the sweetness of being able to save regularly and watching the money grow over time !

So please post your savings target on a regular (e.g., per paycheck) basis and the balance regularly and let's keep on track (exclude 401K since that is forced savings and not the result of pure self-control).
Kill the debt, before it kills you!

I put away at least $700 per paycheck, although it can be a lot more at times.

We don't have a target. We simply save whatever we don't spend.

Excluding 401K contributions, on a monthly basis, it varies from $2000 to $4500.

Another forum I've participated in has what's called "Fiscal Fitness Journals" going back years. It helps others be encouraged by the victories and struggles people have. Might be something to consider suggesting to the Admin team here at SavingAdvice.

The current member blogs could certainly be used for this...

Yes I use the blog here for that and it has been fantastic. Really supportive community empowering to put it all out there and own it. And just keep on trucking.

I will officially start my savings April so I get full month. I will jumpstart though with an off-cycle savings from my refund check -- $1,800. This is factored to my strategy save an average of $1000 a month or $12,000 a year.

                Target : Apr 2014 $1,000
                Balance : Apr 2014 $1,800

All of my savings is 'forced' and not the result of pure self control. When I realized how well it worked to automate my 401k savings, I also automated my Roth IRA and brokerage account. Every payday, I have an automatic transfer, 21% to 401k, 9% to Roth IRA and 12% to my brokerage account.

This is the approach I am taking thanks to advice on here. 401k, Roth, HSA and extra to my mortgage are automated. I never see that.

I have a similar approach but I have to take it out myself as my paychecks vary. Of each check. 10% to Roth IRA, 3% to Emer Fund (on top of my part-time job check), 10% to my growing fund for 4 months expenses. Then I have a set amount I take out for "mini goals" and three 26 week saving challenges, one for a Gift fund, one for a Christmas fund and one for a slush fund to use in unemployment/underemployment for when there is a good groceries sale to take advantage of etc.

After all this is taken out, I take out the money for my bills and spending money. I make sure I hit the minimum for my extra car payment as well but if there is anything extra will go toward that goal.

I use a spreadsheet to calculate tracking for both saving and checking accounts. Currently put away 650 per paycheck, which is 33% of my net paycheck.
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"
