This is going to get interesting. Something definitely needs to change.
If they're not going to come in to work then we sure as heck don't need all of these massive buildings to heat, cool & maintain.
All of these return to office edicts are very much a case of closing the barn door after the horse has run off. It won’t make the horse come back.
Over the past 5 years we’ve gotten very comfortable with remote work. Higher productivity, higher employee satisfaction, higher retention, lower employer costs. It’s not right for every job but for the ones where it is, it benefits all parties involved. I don’t think they can put that genie back in the bottle now.

Since going remote full time since early 2020, I've built a much happier and healthier life by not having to go to an office every day. It was seriously depressing and demoralizing, commuting is a waste of life and resources, and being in an office didn't add value to my work. Interestingly, since then, I've strongly excelled in my career and have increased my income by 40%.
Not every job can or should be done remotely, but there are many that can lend themselves to being performed remotely. Not every worker is capable of remote work, either. Some need the routine and structure of traveling to an office daily, to be watched and told what to do, and have reminders and threats to stay on task. Many need the validation of in-person interactions at their job to feel worth and purpose, and that's OK. A lot of people also need to be away from their homes to escape untenable marriages or situations with kids and other responsibilities which stress them out. Not me! I love where I work, my dog is thrilled we get to spend all day together, and my spouse also works remotely and we love being around each other. I also no longer fear/worry our rural home will be broken into during the weekday while we are away at an office.
We know people who were recalled to an office, and it hasn't worked well. A good handful sought out greener grass after the recall, and they found it. They're working remotely again. The others are biding their time and doing things like "coffee badging". It's so dumb...their teams/bosses are at office locations across the country, yet these people are still forced to drive to an office and badge in "I'm here!" so they can sit and work at a computer and interface with teams remotely from...a different office? It's so, so, stupid.
But my question is what about people who work remotely do they realize there are jobs that can't be done remotely? How will you go to a coffee shop? Or restaurant? Or dr or dentist? Or PT? I guess it can all be remote. But will always be some jobs that can't be done remotely.
