Owning firearms is terrible from a personal finance perspective. People typically buy accessories, safety equipment, more ammunition, etc., etc. Plus there are range fees or the additional costs of gas to get someplace safe to shoot.

Its not an inexpensive hobby by any means.
AR556 is good value bang for the buck

owning guns is an expensive hobby. just the minimal gun+ammunition+safe+shooting is expensive. Much cheaper just to borrow a friend's. lol

I buy mostly vintage style guns that are either already fully depreciated or slowly increase in nominal value over time.

We took the family out to Old Sacramento last week, and splurged on a lot of stuff we didn't really need. But we had a fun time and didn't go too overboard, thankfully. Shopping is a real easy way to burn through cash.

We are in the midst of planning our next trip to Disney World this fall. We are definitely adding a few splurges this time around.

        1. We are flying down. We almost always drive. That adds about $1,200 or so to the cost.

        2. DW and I will be alone the first 4 or 5 nights so we booked 2 special dinners. That will run us probably $250 extra.

We haven't decided yet but we may do one of the behind the scenes tours. Cost can vary a lot on those but the ones we're looking at would probably add another $400-500 to the trip.

So all together, roughly an extra $2,000 over what we usually spend.

I am going to buy a full-sized Oxford English Dictionary - I am too old to be able to use the compact version I have now - 9 pages per page, I need a magnifying glass to read the magnifying glass I use to read it. I am going to cheap out and get the standard set for around $1,500. Some people have said I should just use the internet - I just shake my head and tell them they do not understand books and how looking things up in a dictionary allows for random access to things you never knew you did not know.

            Sigh!

FYI - the most OEDs sold in the US are sold in Dallas where interior designers stock bookshelves by the yard and I bet those are never opened; possibly not even seen.

You are right, they don't understand. I have had to downgrade to using a Kindle at times because books are to often too heavy for me to hold. I have to prop them in my lap on a pillow. At a yard sale several years back we got an entire encyclopedia set and will look things up as needed, and then I will spend I don't know how long browsing through the book I had out. Growing up we had a set of the Book of Knowledge. A bit different than an encyclopedia. I would sit on the floor next to the bookcase, and just start reading. I LOVE to read!

When I was in high school I read an entire encyclopedia each year for my last 3 years - cover to cover, this was during study hall. I graduated 52nd in my class.

Number 53 did not graduate - I love that joke but not a joke, I have ADD and would do anything except study (including reading an encyclopedia cover to cover); same thing happened in college, I just can not study. I am 70 years old and still can't study but I can research something on the internet for hours - the internet is an ADDer''s worst nightmare/best thing ever.

An Xbox One for the girlfriend and I. Does that count as a splurge? * checks with bank account * Yep, definitely counts as a splurge. Ouch.

Just got back from the Chicago Blackhawks convention. It was over $900 just for the room and passes, and then we had to pay inflated downtown prices for everything. We spent about $1,300, but that includes Christmas gifts for a few people. We decided that it was nice to do once, but we probably wouldn't do it again. We really enjoyed meeting the players and getting more signatures on my jersey, but the hotel was a nightmare. They made so many mistakes, especially with my parents room. I really thought my mom was going to completely lose it and get kicked out. I never saw her so mad at non-family people before.

I guess my latest splurge is computer hardware. I really do try my best and research everything so I only get what I really need, from the best quality products and vendors, and at the best prices possible. For example, none of the last 3 laptops/desktops I have purchased were over $250 each, but... I guess when you add it all together, it's still quite a sum.

I don't think they are mindless purchases though. Each machine was bought and set up with very specific purposes in mind (basically for InfoSec, though I do not want to elaborate, sorry). I have two desks cobbled together and cables running carelessly all over it. It's terrible looking, but... yeah, that's my life right now.

Today's splurge: AirBnB & rental car for DW/DS/SIL that isn't truly/totally required. They are visiting DW's family this week, and have been staying with their parents. But for a variety of factors that I won't get into [imagine the stereotypical "in-laws" diatribe here], over the last few days their mother was causing alot of undue stress, which for more reasons too lengthy too get into, is not healthy for DW right now. So when she called me in tears this morning, within the hour I had booked a place for them to stay & a rental car for them to use instead of relying on their parents for them. ~$500 for the next week, but in my not-humble opinion, 100% worth it, albeit mostly unnecessary.

Okay so I don't need to see my family again this year considering we are just going on a trip with my parents in August 8-22. However my grandmother is sick so we are going to hawaii again on August 27 to september 1st. Just me and the kids. Total indulgence. And even my mom flipped out and said can you afford to travel so much. I haven't really added up how much we spend on traveling but I suspect it's a lot.

I got us tickets for $360/per person so the 3 of us is $1180 roundtrip. I did get direct one way and 1 stop on the way so I compromised a tiny bit.

My next indulgence will be I'm debating going traveling in october to UK/Ireland. We're trying to decide whether to take the kids. Yes I know this crazy.

But I figure instead of a super fancy car that other people drive DH and I drive really boring cars so maybe this is our indulgence.

My in-laws are taking their family to Disneyland in December. Their plan is load up on all their Disney paraphernalia (hats, t-shirts, etc.) at the dollar store before their trip. They'll pay 1/6th of what Disneyworld charges.

I hear that suggestion all the time. I suppose it's okay for really young kids who won't know the difference but not beyond 2 or 3 years old.

Something isn't a souvenir if it didn't actually come from the place you visited.

Trip to O’ahu for me 8/20-8/27. LAX to HNL RT was $350 on Sun Country. I’d prefer Hawaiian Air but they were almost double in price.
