  • What'd you lend that never got returned & its value lost?

After high school I lent a Town & Country fairly good condition surfboard to a friend named Scott who never returned it and ended up confessing he sold it. We ended up fighting on the beach at Ala Moana beach park. He was smaller than me and I had him in a full mount and I made him eat sand. Value lost was $150 in 1986. Today's value might be $500.

I can’t think of anything. I’ve never really been one to lend out my belongings like that. If I did ever lose something, it’s long forgotten.

I don't mind lending and usually it is tools.
What irritates me is when they don't return it promptly after borrowing and I have to go run it down.
No more borrowing for those individuals.

Have "lent" money to friends and family on a few occasions knowing full well I'd never see a dime returned.

Good point about not lending money. I never lend money knowing it will never return.

I've not generally loaned out much in the way of anything worth worrying about .... But one thing that I have definitely missed is back from my college days. I had DVDs of Airplane, Airplane 2, and Airport (the movie that both comedies were parodied from). Some of my favorite movies! I loaned them to a friend at some point, and somehow I never ended up getting them back. That was back in ~2007 or so. Now, it's sometimes hard to find DVDs of many recent movies, let alone movies from the 70s/80s ... So I've never replaced them. I'm sure I could find them if I really looked, but I haven't.

You can easily get them on ebay for under $10 each including shipping.

Nothing of any significance. I've never been one to let people borrow things.

Nothing is coming to mind. Like others, I tend not to offer my stuff to others, unless I really trust them like family, and that's not many people, since I come from a small family! Things I've lent of value have all been returned.
                History will judge the complicit.

The DVD thing reminded me .....
I have quite a collection of books on various outdoor topics I'm interested in. Books are something that tend to occasionally get borrowed then not returned.

You could have made him at least pay you back.

Ha-ha, not even the mob could make people pay them back. It was easier for the mob to just snuff out the life of the dead-beat.

I have a friend who went through a messy divorce with the mother of his child. Then he got a girlfriend (who said she was on birth control and wasn't) pregnant twice (she had a miscarriage and didn't tell him). He is constantly getting harassing phone calls and constantly being called a pos from both ex and baby mama. He's a great guy but man is his relationship life screwed. At least he got two great daughters out of the mess.

Anyway I loaned him some books:

                        Never Split the Difference
                        Boundries
How to Stop Worrying & Start Living

He still the Carnegie book after going on 2 or 3 years. It was like a 2nd addition at that. I'd bought him new if I knew he was going to keep it indefinable. But he is worth it either way.

Myrdale, I made it to 58 yrs old single & no kids and still going strong without believing the "I'm on the pill," which every woman says (lol). It's true they may be on the pills up until they feel it is time to start baking the bread in the oven, ha-ha. I'm extremely grateful that I didn't fall for that same lie that your friend succumbed to. My net worth probably would have been cut in half if I had followed in your friend's footsteps.
