  • Finally someone is right about minimum wage

I been saying a long time that it takes a lot to live in this country and that everyone needs to make $100,000. Finally this may happen in California and its good to see. All those rich bastards eat your heart out. workin man gonna be rich to.

U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee makes $50 minimum wage part of Senate run - Silicon Valley Business Journal (bizjournals.com)

Sorry, that's patently absurd, and mere pandering to unthinking people. A baseline of $100k/yr for minimum wage work -- flipping burgers or driving a cash register? Please. That level of income is roughly at the 75th percentile in the country today ... and equal to (or above) what many professionals with advanced degrees and/or years of experience are earning today -- nurses, college professors, construction foremen, physical therapists, accountants, and many more. While I'm all for people getting paid reasonably for their work, ludicrous noise like this only makes things worse because it serves as a lightning rod for opposition. Is minimum wage unreasonably low in many places? Almost certainly, and that should be addressed (and fixed for the long term, like tying it to inflation). Speaking of inflation ... think the last few years have been bad? Just wait for it, if people believe $50/hr min-wage is the answer.

Minimum wage jobs should never be the plan, never a long-term solution, never the means for raising a family. Min-wage jobs should get you by until you can get something better & more stable in place. Minimum wage jobs require a minimum level of skill, knowledge, ability, development, training, and investment. Most min-wage jobs should be a second job, or high school/college students looking for income in available time, or maybe a quick option to keep income flowing in after losing another job. If a person wants something more, do something more ... Learn to manage & lead people. Become invaluable to your employer & leverage it for a more senior job. Build new, valuable skills to open different doors & opportunities. Seek out some of the widely available training that's out there. I'd venture to say that in >95% of cases, if someone has been in the same min-wage job for years on end, they've made choices with how they spend their time & effort that have kept them in that position.

people making bergers are working a whole lot harder than a lawyer. everything is supposed to be even in a free country so everyone can get the same. people that work the hardest should get the most money. what does it hurt to pay them $50 per hour so they can make alot of money? You thank a doctor works as hard as a dishwasher cut me some slack.

Because if employers have to pay more, they raise prices or don't hire people.

If you own a pizza shop, and you have to pay your staff double. You have to charge more or higher fewer people. And, guess who doesn't get hired? That's right, its youth who don't have skills and in particular minority youth.

So by all means if you want to hamper business growth and increase minority unemployment, mandate a minimum wage.

Fair is not the same as equal, free country or not.

A construction worker certainly performs more physically strenuous labor than a lawyer does. And a lawyer performs far more mentally strenuous work than a construction worker. For a doctor to get to the point of treating the very first patient on their own, they need to first get through something like 10 years of undergrad, med school, and residency.... All of which is extremely costly and mentally demanding. The doctor has spent many years and much treasure in getting to that point. The restaurant dishwasher? Walk in, pick up a scrub brush, and you're in business. Earning power is driven in part by merit & preparation. Also by supply/demand -- far fewer people are able to become doctors than we have patients requiring care. Meanwhile, anybody can be a dishwasher.

I think it's fairly clear this thread will be going nowhere productive .... deuces, I'm out.

I wish they would tie minimum wage to inflation and stop the stupid arguing over it. I mean it hasn't gone up since 2009? or 2007? That's ridiculous. And there shouldn't be a lower minimum wage for tipped workers.

What makes you think that in a free country everyone gets the same?

Stuff is super high now and costs more and people are broke. If they will just raise to the $50 an hour people can buy what they want and they won’t be living in some tent. little people should deserve to live in the nice homes also.

The scary thing is that nutjob might get elected.

Can't go anywhere around here without seeing billboards seeking employees, advertising anywhere from $20-40 per hour which is well above minimum wage.
Ask yourself why the current minimum wage workers don't grab those jobs?
                  • They are unreliable and can't be counted on to show up every day
                  • They can't pass a drug screening
                  • They have so many DUI's they can't drive to work anymore
                  • They've disfigured themselves so badly with tattoos, piercings, colored hair, etc. that no employers want them.
                  • They're just plumb lazy and aren't willing to work at something that requires more effort or brain usage than flipping burgers
                  • Etc., etc.
I don't think there has ever been greater opportunity to get ahead and get into a high paying job than right now. It requires effort many aren't willing to make.

Tats have nothing to do with race.
Employers have appearance standards they expect. If your appearance scares customers or other potential employees, that's a problem.

Yep, and employers are free to hire whoever they feel will be the best employee for their business.
