I’m not going to argue the electricity thing. Other than to say the amount of energy needed to send 11 KWHs - the amount to fill up your car so it can make it 40 miles - to your outlet is enormous.

And until the car makers can produce these things without losing money - $ tens of thousands currently - it’s all just another liberal agenda item that has no relationship to reality.
My solar panels produce 11KWH in 50 mins under full sun. You are telling me it takes a stupid amount of energy to produce this power from a power planet?

Less than fires caused by burning gasoline?

And you're right Texus, it's all useless until automakers stop losing money on Electric cars. The demand for earlier electric cars like the Volt/Bolt/BMW I3 are not there. The only demand we see current are Tesla cars(and much like how ITunes help Apple win, Tesla proprietary charging station is what's going to help Tesla win). Without a demand, building only a few thousand electric cars a year is just a big loss since the cost of retooling the assembly line and R&D are fixed costs. The less you sell, the MORE it cost to produce each vehicle.

I think companies are pushing hard with electric cars not to satisfy some kind of liberal agenda, but it's because there's an emerging middle class with loads of wealth in a polluted nation demands it(CHINA). Not only that, the government has the ability to mandate and force people into ONLY electric cars if they please. Car manufactures now see a HUGE opportunity to capture market share and sell millions, not thousands. We are getting an electric car revolution not because of the U.S, but it's because of the tail wind from China and India.

In today’s world, yes: Two thirds of our country’s electricity is produced by coal and natural gas.

Solar power generates very little electricity for power companies.

You do realize that it costs GM about $89,000 to produce a volt, I assume? How much demand would there be at that price you think? Without subsidies and massive losses by GM, that would be your price, plus a few $ grand for profit.

The math simply doesn’t work on these without the government’s meddling.

China’s demand for electric cars isn’t much: Of their new car sales last year, EVs represented 1.1% of sales.

I was talking about future EV sales, not current. EVs currently are still for early adopters. There are few choices that can travel long ranges with the mix of attractiveness and brand power.

Currently it makes very little sense to get an EV and that's not what I am wondering. The original question was "EV in the future", not today. The only viable choice today is the model 3 for the masses, and even that's a little bit too expensive for most people (also unavailable).

The Bolt is not worth the money due to the brand power and attractiveness.
Volt 2 is practically a gas car unless you enjoy charging daily
Leaf/I3/Ionic all have limited range and are not attractive.
Telsa Model S and X are over 100k

We can't expect these cars to penetrate any market with significant sales.

Also the Volt does not cost 89k to make. Ben Klayman divided R&D and plant cost by the number of volt produced at the time. That's a stupid calculation which started the nonsense.

What if the electric car revolution give you more choices with more miles per charge? Will a 25k Honda Civic EV that can travel 300miles on a charge change everything?

Of course it would change everything, but don’t look for that to happen over the next half century.

The Volt costs GM $ tens of thousands more to make than they sell it for, per Reuters, one of the most liberal news outlets:

Newly released data shows that the Volt costs much more to make than its $39,999 asking price.

You haven't seen the new 2018 LEAF, I guess. It has 150 mile range and nicer styling than the original.

I'm thinking about getting one, if only to annoy my husband who has the first generation LEAF. Hate the whole have-to-charge-it, though. My other car is a Mercedes Benz diesel, which typically only needs fuel once a month.

This is exactly what would keep me from ever considering an EV - the limited range. 300 isn't too bad but 150? I often do that in a day. I guess if charging stations become commonplace, like everywhere at homes, malls, parking lots, restaurants, etc. 300 mile range could work but definitely not 150. I'll drive more than that in one stretch.

"The estimated cost is based on the total number of Volts sold through August, which is 21,500"

Again, they are dividing R&D/Tooling by the amount of cars sold at the time.

Did you know that it cost me 40k to produce only 60kwh of power from solar panels? Solar is complete nonsense! Yeah..if I divide what I paid by 1 day of production.....

                            • I can't find any references to such a car on the Internet.
                            • For that much money, I can get a 25 MPG minivan with dual sliding doors and fold-in seats.

                            So... no.

The original question was to see if people here would ever consider buying an electric car but someone here needs to make it into a debate about electric cars being green or not using false facts and talking points.

Could of just stopped at, got a volt..it wasn't for me.

But nope..got to give your 2 cents about how electric cars are idiotic just like how you see 401ks are idiotic.
