And for those who claim the EV is going gangbusters in China, there's this little nugget:

Volt sales going down in 2015..hmm I wonder why..could it be that the Volt 2 is coming out?

And then you show a graph where sales spiked in 2016....mystery solved.

You call it a spike, I call it sub 3% of sales.

Actually, it's barely made it to 1% (the right side legend).

Yes, they did end up selling more of them since 2012, as your graphs clearly show. Did they sell like hotcakes? No but I dont think anyone stated as such. Perhaps I missed something. Anyway, GM actually claims the gen 2 Volt is profitable, but thats probably just fake news, right... But 89k per Volt, in 2017? No, not in reality. Apply the same maths used in 2012 and you will probably get a much different number now.

The cheapest Tesla car you can buy is over 90k. The only other company I can think of is Maserati with comparable pricing in their entire catalog and yet Tesla delivers 25k cars/quarter, which is 4x of that from Maserati and volt sales.

With the model 3, they now have over 400k pre-orders.

When a car company goes full burn on electric cars and not half-ass it, it's an entirely different ball game. Will people line up to buy GOOD electric cars in the future when companies are no longer half-assing with ugly designs and limited range? Maybe..but at least we know they are lining up for Teslas.

Tesla's Q4 2016 and full-year 2016 production and delivery figures just came in on email. We'll delve into the results a bit further in the coming days, but here are some initial highlights followed by the full Tesla announcement:

If EVs are all the rage, why are they losing up to 70% of their value in two years?

MotorBiscuit journalists bring you everything you need to get going in and stay tuned with the EV market. We cover all things Hybrids & Electrics here..

They are green alright ... as in lost green.

You being a car guy should know that depreciation correlates strongly with reliability and desirability. Time and time again, I have said that all the electric cars beside Tesla are not desirable due to poor range and poor design.

Answer me why your range rover is worth way less than a Tesla Model S after 3 years? Teslas depreciate the slowest vs any ultra luxury cars in that price range. The only thing that comes close are Porches.

That's interesting because I've found just the opposite. Everyone I know who got a hybrid (I don't think anyone I know has an EV) did so because they thought it was better for the environment. They knew they were paying a premium so not saving anything in the process. It was actually costing them more.

In the car business, the Tesla is considered an exotic car. The average buyer of a Tesla isn’t buying it for fuel savings. They are buying it for panache. I know three Tesla owners. All three are deep into 6 figures and one of the three is 8 figures.

I love the Tesla and some day might buy one. It will go from 0-60 very quickly. But make no mistake, EVs are decades away from being a car for Everyman, because for now they are still Coal Cars, and converting coal to electricity and delivering it to your outlet 60 miles away is incredibly inefficient.

If you’ve got $40K in solar panels and can generate your own KWs for your $80K EV, it makes sense - I suppose. But there again, $40K buys quite a bit of petro. And for $80K, I can have a petrol Range Rover Sport turbo that will go 400 miles on 40 bucks in gas and climb a mountain the same day. I’ll take the Rover.

How much does cold weather driving effect range (using battery power for cabin heat) ?
