On 10/20 I bought 7 CUTCO knives and a knife block for $16. I spent $20 for roundtrip postage to send them in to CUTCO for sharpening/cleaning/replacement (they have a lifetime guarantee). They ended up replacing all 7 knives with brand new ones.

I sold the single piece for $50 on Monday and today sold the set of 6 for $250.

$36 into $300 plus whatever I get for the block (it's listed for $29 but I'm willing to come down) in just over 3 weeks. I'll take it.

I'm definitely not complaining but the mad rush shopping that started with Thanksgiving is getting a little overwhelming. I usually sell 1 or maybe 2 items a day, and some days none. Since Thursday I've sold 13 items. It's a great time of year to be in retail but as a one-man show, it's a little much.

I also listed a bunch of shirts on Marketplace last night and have been fielding messages all day about those. I've got 2 meetings scheduled for tomorrow for people to buy them, and several others interested if anything falls through.

$1,018.41 net

That made it my highest grossing month of 2023 and my second highest monthly net.

I've been actively working on upping my game, buying and listing more. I'm now up to 362 items for sale, the most I've ever had. So far, it's definitely paying off. We'll see what happens after the holiday buying season is over in a few weeks.

I had a fun little sale today. On Friday, at an estate sale, I bought a Rolex case - the box that the watch comes in. I paid $10. I sold it tonight for $84.50. That's probably the closest I'll ever get to owning a Rolex.

Nice profit on selling that Rolex case. I tried selling my Invicta box exactly like this one but took it down after about 1 year trying to sell it.

Looks like those aren’t nearly as valuable. The Rolex ones go for a lot. If I had the wooden outer box it would have been well over $100.

At your level of selling do you need to have a business license? My level is so low I doubt I’d need one. Is there a dollar amount threshold that would require one?

It depends on the laws where you live. I’ve had a business and sales tax license since the late 80s because it was required for the shows we used to sell at.

1099 changes nothing. All income is reportable whether you get a 1099 or not. 2022 was the first year I got a 1099 for reselling but I’ve filed a return ever year since probably 1988.

I bought 13 Porsche t-shirts at an estate sale on 11/18. I listed one on eBay and within an hour it got taken down. They never really tell you why but it’s possible Porsche reported it, as they’ve been known to do that.

I listed them all on Marketplace instead. As of today I’ve sold 9 of them for a total of $120. I paid $32.50. No 13% eBay fee to deal with this way so much better profit margin. I have 4 left to sell so hopefully another $40-60 once they’re all gone.

I always wondered about that too. Once I listed a used coupon book for sale along with the coupons that I used and which coupons remained in-tact in the book. The publisher of the book contacted me to take down the listing or else they would get attorneys involved. I complied with their request. Making a few dollars was not worth having to deal with attorneys.

There is an official list of things that are restricted (look up eBay VeRO). The problem is anyone can report a listing and claim it’s violating their company rights. Other users can also report a listing, which they could theoretically do to knock out competition. People have had items taken down for being counterfeit when they are positive they are real because they purchased the item from the company directly. That happens a lot with things like designer handbags. That’s part of why eBay started their authentication program.

This time it worked to my advantage as I’m making more on Marketplace than I would have on eBay.

Do you think it's worth switching to marketplace for more selling? Or is it just for stuff that's a pain to ship? And of course ebay is more for stuff that is hard to sell

No. eBay is so easy and has far better seller protection. Way too many scams on marketplace and zero customer service.
