I'm feeling guilty so I wanted to post this. I found $40 cash in the parking lot. I was walking this morning and there it was dropped in the rain. I picked it up and debated going back inside but wasn't sure which store I should go to.

I get a lot of good karma because I lose things all the time. I always return cell phones, purses, wallets, etc. I returned once a coupon book full of coupons to a grocery store but that was in a cart at the entrance. Or keys. But usually I'm that person on the receiving end of getting stuff.

This has happened to me before another $20 in the park walking with the kids cash. Then I kept it and still felt guilty. Now a parking lot? and $40 cash? Uggh. What do I do? Should I call all the stores and see which store had someone looking for money? Is that ridiculous? I'm going to guess because of the rain they were rushing and dropped the money in the middle of the road and didn't see it.

Give it to a homeless person, whoever lost it sure is not homeless

I think finding cash out in the open with nobody around makes the money yours. There's no reasonable way to find it's owner.

Now if you were in line at the supermarket checkout and as you walked up, you saw cash on the floor just as the previous customer was walking away, that's a different story. I'd get her attention and say, "Did you drop this?"

I found a $150 Walmart gift-card on the sidewalk a few years ago. Actually went to some lengths to see if I could find the owner (it was purchased in a store in Ohio, IIRC). Then I waited something like 6 months, just in case the owner had a way of cancelling the card to get their money back. Finally, I just used the card.

Last time I was in Europe we discovered someone left an Ipad on a train and turned it into the lost and found. I will do that with property or if I were to find a wallet with cash.

Strictly cash though I'm going to keep and file it under "do unto others" meaning if I dropped cash I would consider it gone.

            Really? A homeless person couldn't have $40?

I have quite a few patients who are homeless. They still have lives, families, money, jobs in some cases. They just don't have a place of their own to live (unless you count their car for some of them).

I don't think a homeless person would loose $40, they would have it tucked away so deep that it wouldn't come out when they reach for their keys

When I say give it to a homeless I would give it to someone bad looking, very disheveled and bad smelling, not the guy on the corner wearing Levi's holding a sign

I'd donate it. Plus, if you donate it, you can get a tiny little tax writeoff (if you donate it to a qualified charity). Win-win.

I am also a fan of giving it to someone in need.

I'm always finding money, wallets and iPhones. Just about everything I've found has been returned. Last year I found $1,000. in cash lying in the street and ended up turning it in to the Police. Everyone in the world thought I was an idiot not to keep the cash.

Ended up after 90 days no one claimed it so I got it anyway. Pays to be honest . Just yesterday I was out exercising and found a check for $180. lying on the sidewalk. After getting back to my car I checked FaceBook on my phone looking for the person. Turned out she worked just up the street from where I found it.

I walked in to her office unannounced and completely surprised her with the check. Certainly made her day.

That would make for a good episode of "What Would You Do?" with John Quinones. No doubt it my mind that there would be people that would automatically say yes even if it was money planted by actor.

I'm sure some would, but most people are fundamentally honest, especially when put on the spot where they don't have time to think about it. Lying isn't the natural response. That requires thought. Your reflex is honesty.

I would keep it/use it to pay off all my credit card debt since im always up to my eyeballs in debt. Even if you pay your credit cards off in full each month its still considered debt until its paid in full.

I was eating in a little barbeque joint across the railroad tracks a couple months ago, and I noticed a $ bill of some sort underneath an empty table. I went over and picked it up and it was a $100 bill.

I figured that the patron who was there last would likely come looking for it, so I just gave it to the shop owner. Been back several times and never heard a word. Hopefully the owner of the money got it back - it was probably hard-earned.

Found (2) $20 bills laying in my yard last summer when I was mowing. House painters had been working on my place so I asked them .... Did any of you guys happen to lose anything?

One was very quick to speak up that (2) $20 bills had somehow disappeared from his pocket. Must of fell out unnoticed when he was getting keys or something? He was real grateful to get the money back.
