  • Are OLED TVs worth the price?

    Just as the title says.

We bought a 60"-ish Sony Bravia OLED in 2020. It replaced an older LG LED-backlit LCD that died a year outside of warranty. Paid to have the LG fixed, only to have it die again. That's when we replaced it with the Sony. The Sony has a stunningly slim form factor, and I really like the picture. "Crisp" is the only way to describe it, even in 1080, and when we have something 4k, it's amazing.

I don't think I'd upgrade just to upgrade; with electronics we typically don't, until they fail. Case in point, we paid top dollar for one of the first LED-backlit LCD's way back in 2009, a Samsung. Still have it, only does 1080, but 12 trouble-free years have gone by and it still looks very good.
    History will judge the complicit.

Absolutely. Been rocking an OLED for the past 3 years. No burn ins even though i use it as a computer monitor. Picture quality surpasses our legendary Pioneer Kuro plasma tvs.

The 42" 720 LCD I own, I purchased with the Bush stimulus checks. Considering the fact that device has seen 4 presidents now, I am kind of looking forward to the day it dies so I can find out what all the buzz is about.

I think I've heard OLED do blacks really well. My LCD, not so much so.

If you want a truly excellent TV, you won't do better than OLED. It offers better picture quality than standard LCD and QLED TVs can match, and even the more affordable OLED models deliver that superior level of performance.

            Depends what you are doing

Most local and cable channels don't broadcast in the super high def 4000K, so you won't get the most out of your TV if your just watching something

If you are doing Blue Ray or Gaming, then those TVs will shine

We went from 1080P affordable LED/plasma TV's to a 55" OLED in our den. My first reaction when I got it hooked up was "Holy Crap!". We paid $1300 for the 55" OLED at Costco. A very good LED would have cost $500. Was that worth it? I guess so. I still say holy crap when I watch it, especially with 4k content. Just amazing. Would I buy it again? Sure, but I am not as frugal as most.

A good LED (use whatever marketing buzzword they have nowadays) looks great, IMHO. I have a 70" LED in the basement that we bought 6 years ago. Bought the cheapest one we could find. Watched the playoff games on it last week and it was fine. Might cost $600 to buy one today. I keep thinking about replacing it with a 77" LG OLED for $2600, but haven't. Just not worth it for how little we watch that TV.

I will add that I tried to adjust the settings on my OLED to see if I could improve the picture. Only took a few small changes and it looked like crap. I just leave it on factory settings now. But it showed me how fragile the wow settings were. Buy an OLED and set it up wrong and it will look worse than an LED from 10 years ago.
