I've taken many a vacation week and just stayed home, went hunting or fishing and took care of a few things around the place. Just as relaxing and rewarding as jumping in the car or on a plane and going somewhere.

Understood. I've done the same. But I think there is a difference between "taking a vacation day" and "going on a vacation". Staying home to clean the garage is not a vacation even if I take off from work to do it.

We are trying to vacation more versus just seeing family. Last year was a huge anomaly vacationing so much. Typically we see family, but it uses vacation days because we have no choice but to fly.

MM how do you do 1 overnight a month and not spend $50/night on a hotel? I get the staying free going to hawaii for $1500 for 2 people, not 4, but all your weekend getaways are you staying with friends and family?

Any nights away from home are usually with family or using someone else's property, like I said.

We aren't "travel" people so it's never going to be a big financial priority for us. If we had to pay for hotels, we probably wouldn't travel as much. We just work with what we have to work with. The frequent weekend trips are probably mostly a function of our decision to move to lower-cost region away from all our family and friends. We like spending time with our family.

I have several staycations before year end, but none with travel involved.

Counting the days here. We leave on the 29th for a few pre-cruise days in Florida before a 7-day cruise on 12/4.

We also have a trip planned to Virginia over Thanksgiving weekend but might be postponing that until January. We haven't decided yet.

DS are you going to disney and a disney cruise? We are still excited about going to disney for the first time with the kids. And no our kids still are frightened about the characters. But next June i"m thinking one day to break them in.

MM that makes sense for how you can vacation monthly an overnight without going over $1500.

                      Yes and No.
Yes, we are going to Disney. No, it is not a Disney cruise. We should arrive in Florida early Thursday and will spend Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at Disney. Then on Sunday we sail on Royal Caribbean Oasis.

There is a Disney connection, however, because it's a group cruise organized by disboards.com, the online Disney community that we are active with. They have over 200 cabins for our group so there will be lots of fellow Disney enthusiasts onboard and we have a number of private events for our group.

Have you met up with people from disboards before?

Many, many times. We have a ton of friends who we've met through the DIS connection. In July, we went to the meet they had at Disney World for the 10th anniversary of their podcast. In October, we were at a meet in Delaware. We've attended meets in NJ, MA, PA, and VA. As a matter of fact, next Saturday we're having dinner nearby with 2 couples that we met via the DIS. It's a pretty big segment of our social circle.

Just came back from a 5 day cruise, total cost was 800 after using points for the inside room. This will be our only vacation for the year because of the new baby.

We really need to take more vacations. Going to set up something longer next year.

i love cruising, not only for the fun and experience of it but for the value. cost of hotel alone for 5 days would be around $500, then you get all your meals and entertainment included. some friends of ours are taking a 2 weeker to hawaii in january and want us to join them.

We usually only go 7 days but I'd love to go maybe 10. But seems like when you rent condo's you have to do either 7 or 14. 10 seems like it would be perfect! 7 is really only 6 with the coming and going days.
