  • Water softener for house

Our water here is a lot harder than it was in my apartment complex. The water sometimes tastes metallic.

We finally had it tested (figured out a way to do it for free) and its 6 GPG. I'm thinking now of having one installed but I was quoted about 5K which I cannot currently afford due to having dumped so much money in the house already.

Did any of you get a water softener for in your home for hard water?
How much did it cost to install?

contact a plumber; not a water softener company.

I think I paid 1500 for the water softener and install in 2013.

According to this water quality board, your water is below "Hard".

Until you can afford a water softener, bottled water (in 5 gallon jugs) is a relatively cheap and cash flow friendly alternative for drinking and cooking.

I'm currently researching this for our cottage. We have the option of renting one through places like Culligan, or buying our own. The plumber gave a ballpark estimate of about $1500 for install if we buy our own, but my husband and father are going to do it themselves. So far, I think we have decided to buy a Fleck and see how we like it.

You could do what I did and rent one from cullingan for $19 a month for a year and then go get one from Home Depot for $600 and install it yourself. Culligan included the cost of install with the rental and that made it real easy to put my own in a year later.

I replaced mine 6 years ago. One of the first appliances I did myself at my house. I think it cost around 400-500 for the unit, and probably saved myself 200-300 in labor (mainly sweating 2 water lines to it).
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"

Definitely NOT $5K, I would say maybe $1200 for one we installed over 10 years ago. We sold that house. Next house didn't need one. Last house, we rented our water softener as we knew we would move before recouping the cost.

Tomhole that sounds like a great plan. One question though, did you home already have the hook ups or did they have to create the plumbing for that?

I just had the hot water heater replaced at the home so everything is brand new shiny and up to code which is why I want to try to get this water softener in sooner rather than later.

Thank you everyone for your feedback so far. I'm revealed to know I can probably get this done for less than 2K or even just rent one until I have a little more cash flow.

They had to run some pipes to hook it up and for the drain for when it regenerated. I unhooked it when I cancelled the contract and the new one hooked right up easy peasy.
