Congratulations on the new car purchase. It sounds like you're really enjoying it. My situation is similar to feh's, but neither DH or I are "car people." What we spend on golf and our dog would probably make some people roll their eyes.

This is a change of topic, but since you brought up retirement and you seem to be focused on it, if you like to read books on personal finance you may want to check out the new book by Jane Bryant Quinn: "How to Make Your Money Last: The Indispensable Retirement Guide." Ms. Quinn is one of the most sensible, smart personal finance writers out there. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jack-m...b_8842342.html

Sounds like you are happy with this change in behavior. Not just rushing to buy a new car but buying one thoughtfully.

reading that huge tome of hers 23 yrs ago (I forget the name) saved my life, seriously, she taught me so much. I cringe to think of the choices I would've made if I did not benefit from her knowledge.

Well, I'm 43 pages into the book and it already provided info I did not know and helps me plan for retirement. I did not know that my wife gets a spousal SS benefit while I am still alive. I thought she only got something when I died. That certainly improves our long term outlook for having enough money. My SS benefit at age 70 will be the max. Adding 1/2 of that again on top of it when she reaches FRA (I will be 71) is a nice bump in the out years. Between my SS, her spousal SS and my pension (all COLA), we can live forever and not run out of money. Good news for us. Great news for the kids inheritance.

Thank you for the recommendation. Looking forward to what I discover in the remaining 300 pages.

            Tom
