Not sure why "what the average person spends per month" is relevant here. When creating your budget, you need to take your own specific situation into account. This number will vary widely from person to person.

My wife and I have 2 cars. We drive 15K miles/year combined and average 35 mpg, which comes out to 35 gallons per month.

Our gas budget is $360/mo. It does change seasonally, because my DH is a teacher who doesn't commute during the summer (which is awesome because that is when gas is most expensive in our area). I think it depends on where you live and whether or not you have to commute to work.

"Average" is a misnomer, although the average annual mileage driven is 16,550 miles per year over all age groups, according to the USDOT. The average gas mileage of new cars is 24.8mpg. The average gallon of gas (regular) is at $3.61.

That would put the "average" monthly cost of gas at $200.76 per month.

This all really means nothing other than a reference point. You might drive more or less on an annual basis. The price of gas goes up and down, and varies by region. Your gas mileage might be more or less. But you can use the above model for calculating your own "norm" by dividing "miles driven" by "miles per gallon", and multiplying by your gas price per gallon, then multiplying or dividing for the time period you are trying to calculate (day/week/month/year, etc).

I'm currently running about $320/month in gas. My mileage sucks, comparatively, at a paltry 20.3 mpg average, and I commute almost 80 miles per day.
          History will judge the complicit.

            Truck - 85 dollars a week. Gets 10MPG as it has V10.
Hybrid - 35 dollars a week. Gets 30MPG when it should be getting 40MPG.

            Avaerage $400 a month.

              Around $150 a month.

My drive to and from work is short, but I tend to drive a lot in the evenings and on off days.

I spend about $100 a month, and my wife spends about $80 a month. My truck is driven on weekends, so I put maybe $60 a month in it. Plus add in power equipment, boat, lawn mowers, PWC...we're probably creeping up on $300/mo.

Lawdy, between my wife and I, we spend about $320/month! And we don't have long commutes (ours is six miles one way). But I do log about 320 miles a week in our minivan which is our weekend vehicle. We live in a rural area, so although work is close everything else is a haul.

It's kinda scary though to see what others are spending. I would characterize us as heavy drivers, speeders, or needless drivers but we seem to spend considerably more on gas.

I budgeted about $300/month. I drive a 350z. Commute about ~55 mi / day for work, and occasionally visiting the gf. Around 60-70% highway, 30-40% local. Avg 21mpg. The cost of having fun while I drive

                      Budgeting

I budget $140 a month. I use about $80-90 a month. The extra goes back into savings for repairs or annual insurance costs. So roughly $1100 a year with this car.

I budget over the amount I usually use because I have to attend meetings for work and get reimbursed for mileage and some of those meetings are 150 miles away one way. I always have a cushion in my gas envelope for those potential weeks/months.

And I drive a Prius. I average 500 miles per tank.

The car documentation says it is a 12 gallon tank but I have never gotten more than 9 at any fill up, even when the car said I could only drive another 50 miles.

Previous car was budgeted $200 a month for a 2002 Hyundai Elantra. Usually used $160 a month.

But it really depends on how many miles YOU drive.

When I created my budget 10 years ago I took three average months, saved every receipt, added them up divided by three and added 15% (inflation and rising gas prices). Haven't really changed that figure much in 10 years.
