  • I have (somewhat) decided to tackle the decluttering on a 1 room/week or month basis. I can do the kitchen (again-I still have more), living room and dining room while doing batch cooking and/or watching the Bears & Cubs. this morning I tackled my dresser & nightstand. I found an item I had been seeking for about 2 weeks. I found 6 new panties. I found 3 new bras. I will be trashing the old, poor condition ones and rotating these in. I found a BUNCH of gloves-will start using these. Found 2 aprons-donate pile for 1 + keep 1. Also ‘found’ were 5 bandanas which I will give to DD1 as they dress the dog w/these. Bag of tops that were favors for DD1’s bat mitzvah >22 y/ago. These will also go to DD1.

And I have barely cracked the drawers and done nothing in the closet.

    • I've started the guest room closet--urged on by my offer to put up some students who need a weekend place at the end of the month. Out went lots of bags and misc stuff. More tomorrow when I hope the cold will lift!

      • Five or six magazines and my own personal hoarding issue--the Sunday NYT went too!
Much more to come --today I hope!

        • Yesterday, I did some financial decluttering (see my thread on the Personal Finance board). I closed one account and transferred a bunch of money out of another. Closing the one account will eliminate statements and allow me to shred the paperwork I have from that account, freeing up one file folder in my drawer. It will also be one less thing to keep track of, which is a form of clutter.

          • Catalogs Decluttered

I've tried to reduce duplicates, but I seem to still get way too many catalogs.
I did a huge purge of them today--enough so my brown paper grocery bag split and spilled all over the floor. Tomorrow's goal: office table.

Good job! To eliminate catalogs check out CatalogChoice which is a free service. I have used them and did see a drop in the amount of catalogs I received this past year.

              • I cleared a months worth of 'I need this' from my kitchen table this morning. Filed some. Tossed/recycled some. Still have 4 items I need to follow up on. Maybe later today. DD2 is coming over w/DGS1 so will have to see how the day goes.

                • Took care of 2 of the follow up items in my kitchen table pile.

While I was waiting for DD2 & DGS1 I went over 4 magazines I had been ‘saving.’ Into recycle they went. I still have a stack of stuff to go thru.

                  • I cleaned out my coupon organizer. I do this about every two months, but really could be done more often. Coupons recycled!

                    • While I was doing my monthly sink drain flush in the kitchen on Fri I tossed a toothbrush that I had used for some cleaaning but have not used in forever.

                      • Today I'm working on some year-end financial stuff. I don't have all year-end statements yet but I have a lot of them. I've already gone through 6 files and pulled out all of the monthly or quarterly statements and replaced them with the year-end statements which take up a lot less room. Everything else went into the to-be-shredded bag.

I also just verified that the money market transfers I made last week have reached our checking account. I just made the full $5,000 2011 Roth contributions to both of our accounts! Yes. January 8 and our Roths are fully funded for the year. That is by far the earliest we have ever done that.

Great tip for others reading. You do not need to keep monthly and quarterly statements once the year end statement is in hand. I actually keep all of our statements on our external hard drive. No paper to file!

                          • De-cluttered and purged all under sink cupboards. It's been convenient to load clean-up products in a cardboard 6 pack drink container which keep everything upright in minimal space. I've moved containers with small amounts of cleaning product to the busiest bthrm to use it up and divided up supplies. Shabby towels are waiting to be cut into home made handi-wipes [1:4 Pine-Sol, H2O].

Wonderful how much stuff has been removed/recycled by many who are pushing through piles of clutter and finding it's easier to use stuff if you can find it.

                            • Entered a bunch of Coke Rewards codes.
Cleaned a section of floor next to my bed.
Did a little more with the financial statements.
Fixed a problem with our printer and cleared out some ink cartridges and boxes that were sitting around.

                              • A bag clothes that I don't wear or that DD has outgrown is on the front steps awaiting pick up.
I've also dumped a couple gifts that we don't want, and will freecycle some more today.

After lunch I'll spend 30 minutes in the guest room culling some of those things.
