Re: what is your goal for 2007?

Actually, I have been thinking about this for a little while now. I was even going to write about it in my blog, but this thread will do.

My 2006 goal was to make the most dramatic turn-around as I possibly can, financially. Actually, the exact wording involved expletives so I've decided not to use them. As PP has to remind me from time to time, this is suppose to be a family forum.

Have I done it though? Well at the time of this writing... I have saved up to more than 10k in emergency fund, and at the same time, have paid down more than 10k in student loans. Between the two, my net worth jumped from -38k to -16k. For a man with modest income and going through a divorce, I am extremely proud of that, especially since more than a year ago, I haven't even started paying my students loans nor did I have anything in savings. It's a shame that I had to pay so much money in legal fees though.... Still, I'm going to chaulk it up to a having met my goal. *pats himself on the back*

I have also decided on what my 2007 goal will be. It's a deceptively simple one really. I call it, "Bye bye, student loans!" The only snag is that it's going to be easier said than done. I've got 27k to go, and by all accounts (not having any more assets to liquidate and not wanting to reduce my 401k contributions... which currently stands at 25%), it should be numerically impossible for me to achieve.

Ah, but what's life without a little challenge to spice things up? My student loan is the only outstanding loan I have left, so why not tackle it with zeal? Realistically, I just want to pay it down as far as I can get it.

Build up a 3 month EF, and start contributing to my Roth again. I'll be done paying off all my CC debt by the end of this month (Yay!!), just in time for Christmas spending. I should be getting a raise in January. Won't be much but every little bit helps.

On schedule to clear the last of my credit card debt at the end of March.

In April redirect the credit card payment to my emergency fund. The goal is to double the existing total from six months to a year.

Intend to finish up an on-going renovation of my teeth. Mostly replacing antique fillings.

Mine has more to do with making money - we're not in debt but hubby can't retire unless I can bring in a little more. I prefer NOT to get a job outside the home - why lock myself into an inflexible schedule just when HIS becomes more flexible? - so doing more writing and selling online. Just released a new book that I hope will do well, the topic is certainly broad!

And IMHO, anybody who wants to get out of debt really really needs to read anything by Dave Ramsey or listen to his show. Awesome info.

actually i shouldnt limit myself, i am in MA, where gay marriage is legal, so i would accept a rich old man as well......

With new job: Pay all credit cards, $5,000 in emergency fund, start saving for a new house.

Without new job: $12,000 towards debt, $5,000 in emergency fund, start saving for a new house (which will take longer).

Re: what is your goal for 2007?

                              1. EF is currently at about one weeks take home. by the end of 2007 I hope to have it up to one month's take home. That means I have to save 225 a month for th enext 14 months and not touch any of it for the house. That is alot easier said than done.
                              2. To drop down to one car. It will be paid of in January so we plan to sell it or give it away and DH will walk to work and DS2 and I will walk to the store. This frees up about 100 a month in insurance and gasoline.
                              3. Half of the the extra money from not having a car payment and expense will go into a vacation fund so our trips to the East don't use a credit card. We are planning on two trips this year. The other half will go into the house. It will need a lot of fixing up plus we don't have any appliances except for a washer. So a new or used stove, fridge, dryer, dishwasher (maybe) will be among the first improvements we make. Actually alot of paint will be the first. The goal is to not use any credit cards to do it.
                              4. Increase the 401K percentage by 2.5 percent in January and in July as we did this year.
                              5. Increase our Tithe by a percent in August as usual.
                              6. Pay off the medical bills from January 2006 (that will take alot.) Right now we pay 50 a month on 4 bills. At this rate if I add what I was paying to the next payment I will accomplish this.
                              7. Pay off the IRS bill we weren't expecting. (will come mostly from the tax return)
I hadn't made this out until I saw this thread. I am going to make and print a copy so I can check every month to see how we are doing on it. Would be cool if we could check back with everyone who writes in this thread every month to see how we are doing. Maybe you guys are already doing that and I am late.

Somehow, I couldn't help but laugh at that. Are you sure you're not setting your standards too high?
