  • Cheapest Car Insurance

    Hi Guys,

I am looking to change car insurance. Anybody know a really bang up (low prices, great value) company I should consider?

There is no answer to this question. Rates are totally dependent on where you live, what you drive, your driving record, your credit score, your age, your gender, etc.

Get quotes from multiple companies. Makes sure they are all quoting out the same terms.

Costco members can "save" on car insurance with a certain provider - check that out.

Otherwise, search around and play the insurance game with a few places.

We've been with GEICO for over 20 years (since before Buffet bought it). Every few years I shop around and decide to stick with them. I don't know if they'd wind up being the best for your situation, but they are one to consider.

All - thanks for your comments and feedback. My girlfriend and I ended up consolidating our car insurance with Geico. We saved something like $60 a month. Which may not seem like a lot, but on a yearly basis, it can add up.

$60 a month seems like a lot to me.
              Congratulations.

Are you paying the full premium to avoid installment charges?

The best rates that I found around me is from Erie Insurance. But, that is just me in my particular location and circumstances.

This question comes up from time to time, but there is no real one size fits all answer. The best advice is to shop around.

Our premium is 25% higher when paid monthly instead of up-front. With two teens in a high-rate state, that's a serious chunk of coin.

Wow. That is a big difference.

Our company charges a small installment free ($4.50 I think) for each partial payment. So if you chose to pay monthly, that would be $54/year which is a fraction of one percent of the total. I usually split it into 2 or 3 payments just for cash flow reasons.

I know a lot of folks don't think this way, but I'm small town and have always believed that insurances is pretty important and that you should buy it with someone you know and have a relationship with, then stick with them if their pricing remains fair. (not necessarily low, but fair)

In event of a large claim, you'll be glad to have this guy / gal in your corner.

I have similar views on banking and lending. Prefer to deal with a "person" rather than going out on-line looking for the lowest price.

Some insurance companies offer a device you plug into your dash and keeps track of your hard stops (less than 7 mph per second) or total miles for a period of time. They give you a discount based on your performance sometimes up to 30% after the 90 day testing period. check out Safeco ritetrack or similar.

Every broker told me i have the most inexpensive insurance with Mercury.

Then I found Metromile. Went from $200 to $100 a month. If you don't drive a crazy amount this is great insurance for you.

I need to do this. Our car insurance has gone up $17 per month from two different rate hikes in the last 4 months. We haven't had any accidents so I'm thinking this is just going to be a trend...

I'd recommend getting to know an agent to help save money!

My other half makes it a point to get to know our insurance agent (and anyone else we have to pay). So, we've been able to get really great deals on car insurance. We have full coverage on two vehicles, renter's insurance, and life insurance through him and get an amazing deal. We get some freebies too (Christmas gift, a free month if we refer someone, etc).
