6 Medicare Advantage Perks Quietly Ending After the Holidays

Medicare Advantage plans have long been marketed as offering extra perks beyond traditional Medicare, from gym memberships to grocery allowances. But in 2026, many of these benefits are quietly being scaled back or eliminated after the holiday season. For retirees who rely on these perks to stretch their budgets, the changes can feel sudden and frustrating. Understanding which perks are ending is critical to planning ahead. Here are six Medicare Advantage benefits that seniors will notice disappearing in the new year.

1. Free Gym Memberships

Fitness perks such as SilverSneakers have been a popular draw for Medicare Advantage plans. But several insurers are ending free gym memberships in January, citing rising program costs. Seniors who relied on these memberships for affordable exercise will now face monthly fees. The loss of fitness perks highlights the shift toward cost-cutting in Advantage plans. Retirees must decide whether to pay out-of-pocket or seek community alternatives.

2. Grocery Allowances

Some Medicare Advantage plans offered monthly grocery stipends to help seniors afford healthy food. These allowances are being reduced or eliminated in 2025. For retirees living on fixed incomes, the loss of grocery support can be significant. Rising food prices make the change even harder to absorb. Seniors must adjust budgets to cover higher grocery bills without assistance.

3. Over-the-Counter (OTC) Credits

OTC credits allowed seniors to purchase items like vitamins, pain relievers, and first-aid supplies at no cost. Many plans are scaling back these credits, reducing monthly amounts, or removing them entirely. Seniors who relied on OTC benefits will now face higher pharmacy expenses. The change underscores the broader trend of trimming supplemental perks. Retirees must plan for higher out-of-pocket costs.

4. Transportation Services

Transportation benefits, such as free rides to medical appointments, are being cut back in 2026. Seniors who cannot drive or rely on these services will face new challenges. The loss of transportation perks highlights the vulnerability of retirees to mobility issues. Retirees must explore alternative options, such as community ride programs or local senior centers.

5. Vision and Dental Extras

Expanded vision and dental coverage have been a selling point for Medicare Advantage. But many plans are reducing benefits, limiting coverage for exams, glasses, or dental cleanings. Seniors may face higher out-of-pocket costs for routine care. The change reflects insurers’ efforts to control expenses. Retirees must confirm how their plan’s coverage is shifting.

6. Holiday Wellness Incentives

Some plans offered seasonal wellness incentives, such as gift cards for completing health screenings. These perks are being discontinued in 2025. Seniors who relied on small rewards to offset costs will notice their absence. The loss of wellness incentives highlights the broader trend of trimming non-essential perks. Retirees must adjust expectations for supplemental benefits.

Preparing for Fewer Perks

Taken together, these changes reshape the Medicare Advantage landscape for retirees. Free gym memberships, grocery allowances, and OTC credits all provided meaningful support. Seniors must remain vigilant to avoid being caught off guard by disappearing perks. The impact is particularly significant for retirees who chose Advantage plans specifically for supplemental benefits.

Medicare Advantage perks may be ending, but seniors can prepare by planning early. By reviewing benefits, budgeting carefully, and seeking assistance, retirees can reduce the impact of disappearing perks. Winter may bring new challenges, but it also offers opportunities to strengthen healthcare planning. Staying proactive ensures seniors remain in control of their medical expenses.
